So I decided to discern the benefit of wisdom and knowledge over foolish behavior and ideas; however, I concluded that even this endeavor is like trying to chase the wind!

我又专心察明智慧、狂妄，和愚昧，乃知这也是捕风。

我专心想要明白智慧，想要明白狂妄与愚昧，方知这也是捕风。

不如專心考辨、何為智慧、何為癡頑、何為愚蒙、乃知此亦如捕風、

Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

Then I used my mind to understand what it really means to be wise. And I wanted to know what foolish pleasure is all about. But I found out that it’s also like chasing the wind.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.

And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is striving after wind.

And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

I thought deeply about the effects of indulging myself with wine( all the while my mind was guiding me with wisdom) and the effects of behaving foolishly, so that I might discover what is profitable for people to do on earth during the few days of their lives.

But examine all things; hold fast to what is good.

I did not restrain myself from getting whatever I wanted; I did not deny myself anything that would bring me pleasure. So all my accomplishments gave me joy; this was my reward for all my effort.Yet when I reflected on everything I had accomplished and on all the effort that I had expended to accomplish it, I concluded:“ All these achievements and possessions are ultimately profitless– like chasing the wind! There is nothing gained from them on earth.”Next, I decided to consider wisdom, as well as foolish behavior and ideas. For what more can the king’s successor do than what the king has already done?

I decided to carefully and thoroughly examine all that has been accomplished on earth. I concluded: God has given people a burdensome task that keeps them occupied.I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man on earth, and I concluded: Everything he has accomplished is futile– like chasing the wind!

I have examined all this by wisdom; I said,“ I am determined to comprehend this”– but it was beyond my grasp.Whatever has happened is beyond human understanding; it is far deeper than anyone can fathom.I tried to understand, examine, and comprehend the role of wisdom in the scheme of things, and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the insanity of folly.
