How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up?

How could one person chase a thousand? How could two make ten thousand run away? It couldn’t happen unless their Rock had deserted them. It couldn’t take place unless the Lord had given them up.

How could one have chased a thousand, and two have put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had given them up?

爾中之人、五可驅百、百可驅萬、敵必殲於爾刃。

是以爾中之人、一可驅千、蓋爾之上帝耶和華助爾以戰、踐其前言。

有一人以驅逐、則爾之千軍皆遁、有五人以追襲、則爾之全師俱奔、即有孑遺、如山巔孤竹、如嶺上單旌。

爾不祐我、如鬻選民、雖得價值、於爾無所加兮、

耶和華告以色列族曰、爾母見出、必有離書、離書云何、爾身見鬻、必有所償、所償伊誰、爾母見出、爾身見鬻、乃罪應爾。

故耶和華怒以色列族、付之於米所波大米王、古山哩薩田、為其役事、凡歷八年。

爾不令我禁錮於敵人、導我至安閒之地兮、

敵之軍旅、以及鄉民、防禦之兵、流亡之寇、無不戰慄、地亦震動、上帝使之。在便雅憫之其庇亞、掃羅之戍卒、見敵軍漸散。掃羅使從者核其民數、欲知前往者為誰、既核之後、知約拿單與其持兵之士不在。

三百人吹角、耶和華使遍營之人、自相攻擊、敵眾奔至西哩勒之伯示大、又至亞伯米何拉界之大八。以色列族之納大利、亞設、馬拿西支派俱集、追襲米田人。

故耶和華怒以色列族、付於四周之敵、為人所虜、莫能扞禦。

如上帝執人而禁之、當眾而鞫之、孰能禦焉。

耶和華曰、爾素鬻於遠邦、不受價值、今予不償價以贖爾。

既無可償、主命鬻其身、與妻孥、及其所有以償、

上帝使作惡者陷我、不義者害我。

亞蘭軍雖寡、因猶大族遺列祖之上帝、故耶和華付其眾於敵手、以罰約轄。
