I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plague; I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts, the venom of vipers that glide in the dust.

I will send them hunger. It will make them weak. I will send terrible sickness. I will send deadly plagues. I will send wild animals that will tear them apart. Snakes that glide through the dust will bite them.

“ Or suppose I were to send wild animals to invade the country, kill the people, and make the land too desolate and dangerous to pass through.

“ I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,” says the Lord.“ I will send the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away, the vultures to devour, and the wild animals to finish up what is left.

If I go out into the fields, I see the bodies of people slaughtered by the enemy. If I walk the city streets, I see people who have died of starvation. The prophets and priests continue with their work, but they don’t know what they’re doing.”

You will be pierced with sharp arrows and burned with glowing coals.

The famine has blackened our skin as though baked in an oven.

Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.

They will die from terrible diseases. No one will mourn for them or bury them, and they will lie scattered on the ground like manure. They will die from war and famine, and their bodies will be food for the vultures and wild animals.”

Even if they hide at the very top of Mount Carmel, I will search them out and capture them. Even if they hide at the bottom of the ocean, I will send the sea serpent after them to bite them.

“ Now this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How terrible it will be when all four of these dreadful punishments fall upon Jerusalem— war, famine, wild animals, and disease— destroying all her people and animals.

The wolf and the lamb will feed together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. But the snakes will eat dust. In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Pestilence marches before him; plague follows close behind.

When he sees how good the countryside is and how pleasant the land, he will bend his shoulder to the load and submit himself to hard labor.

Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him and rained down hail and burning coals.The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded amid the hail and burning coals.He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies; great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused.

What sorrow awaits you who say,“ If only the day of the Lord were here!” You have no idea what you are wishing for. That day will bring darkness, not light.In that day you will be like a man who runs from a lion— only to meet a bear. Escaping from the bear, he leans his hand against a wall in his house— and he’s bitten by a snake.

Then the Lord God said to the serpent,“ Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live.

“ The siege and terrible distress of the enemy’s attack will be so severe that you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters, whom the Lord your God has given you.

The parched tongues of their little ones stick to the roofs of their mouths in thirst. The children cry for bread, but no one has any to give them.The people who once ate the richest foods now beg in the streets for anything they can get. Those who once wore the finest clothes now search the garbage dumps for food.The guilt of my people is greater than that of Sodom, where utter disaster struck in a moment and no hand offered help.Our princes once glowed with health— brighter than snow, whiter than milk. Their faces were as ruddy as rubies, their appearance like fine jewels.But now their faces are blacker than soot. No one recognizes them in the streets. Their skin sticks to their bones; it is as dry and hard as wood.Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger. Starving, they waste away for lack of food from the fields.

The Lord will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, and with blight and mildew. These disasters will pursue you until you die.
