我向我的百姓发怒，使我的产业被亵渎，将他们交在你手中，你毫不怜悯他们，把极重的轭加在老年人身上。

看哪，耶和华使地空虚，变为荒凉；又翻转大地，将居民分散。那时百姓怎样，祭司也怎样；仆人怎样，主人也怎样；婢女怎样，主母也怎样；买物的怎样，卖物的也怎样；放债的怎样，借债的也怎样；取利的怎样，出利的也怎样。地必全然空虚，尽都荒凉；因为这话是耶和华说的。地上悲哀衰残，世界败落衰残；地上居高位的人也败落了。地被其上的居民污秽；因为他们犯了律法，废了律例，背了永约。所以，地被咒诅吞灭；住在其上的显为有罪。地上的居民被火焚烧，剩下的人稀少。

不像我拉着他们祖宗的手，领他们出埃及地的时候，与他们所立的约。我虽作他们的丈夫，他们却背了我的约。这是耶和华说的。”

凡遇见他们的，就把他们吞灭。敌人说：‘我们没有罪；因他们得罪那作公义居所的耶和华，就是他们列祖所仰望的耶和华。’

不像我拉着他们祖宗的手，领他们出埃及的时候，与他们所立的约。因为他们不恒心守我的约，我也不理他们。这是主说的。”

护卫长将耶利米叫来，对他说：“耶和华你的神曾说要降这祸与此地。耶和华使这祸临到，照他所说的行了；因为你们得罪耶和华，没有听从他的话，所以这事临到你们。

他们必回答说：‘是因离弃了耶和华他们神的约，侍奉敬拜别神。’”

他说：“我为耶和华万军之神大发热心；因为以色列人背弃了你的约，毁坏了你的坛，用刀杀了你的先知，只剩下我一个人，他们还要寻索我的命。”耶和华说：“你出来站在山上，在我面前。”那时耶和华从那里经过，在他面前有烈风大作，崩山碎石，耶和华却不在风中；风后地震，耶和华却不在其中；地震后有火，耶和华也不在火中；火后有微小的声音。以利亚听见，就用外衣蒙上脸，出来站在洞口。有声音向他说：“以利亚啊，你在这里做什么？”他说：“我为耶和华万军之神大发热心；因为以色列人背弃了你的约，毁坏了你的坛，用刀杀了你的先知，只剩下我一个人，他们还要寻索我的命。”
