“ True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.

Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

“ You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to the sojourner, or to the fatherless, nor take the widow’s raiment to pledge;

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

You must never twist justice or show partiality. Never accept a bribe, for bribes blind the eyes of the wise and corrupt the decisions of the godly.

“ You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.“ You must not exploit a widow or an orphan.

‘ Cursed is anyone who denies justice to foreigners, orphans, or widows.’ And all the people will reply,‘ Amen.’

“ In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.

and impartial in your judgments. Hear the cases of those who are poor as well as those who are rich. Don’t be afraid of anyone’s anger, for the decision you make is God’s decision. Bring me any cases that are too difficult for you, and I will handle them.’

Both their hands are equally skilled at doing evil! Officials and judges alike demand bribes. The people with influence get what they want, and together they scheme to twist justice.

“ You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it’s like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.

“ You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.

Your leaders are rebels, the companions of thieves. All of them love bribes and demand payoffs, but they refuse to defend the cause of orphans or fight for the rights of widows.

“ All who heard me praised me. All who saw me spoke well of me.For I assisted the poor in their need and the orphans who required help.I helped those without hope, and they blessed me. And I caused the widows’ hearts to sing for joy.Everything I did was honest. Righteousness covered me like a robe, and I wore justice like a turban.I served as eyes for the blind and feet for the lame.I was a father to the poor and assisted strangers who needed help.I broke the jaws of godless oppressors and plucked their victims from their teeth.

They are fat and sleek, and there is no limit to their wicked deeds. They refuse to provide justice to orphans and deny the rights of the poor.

How long, O Lord? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat?How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast?They crush your people, Lord, hurting those you claim as your own.They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans.

But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?

Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court.For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.

Fathers and mothers are treated with contempt. Foreigners are forced to pay for protection. Orphans and widows are wronged and oppressed among you.

Those who are honest and fair, who refuse to profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong—

“ It is wrong to take a set of millstones, or even just the upper millstone, as security for a loan, for the owner uses it to make a living.

Return the cloak to its owner by sunset so he can stay warm through the night and bless you, and the Lord your God will count you as righteous.

“ For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.

How dare you crush my people, grinding the faces of the poor into the dust?” demands the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.

Even common people oppress the poor, rob the needy, and deprive foreigners of justice.

You probably think the land belongs to the powerful and only the privileged have a right to it!You must have sent widows away empty handed and crushed the hopes of orphans.

What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night, thinking up evil plans. You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out, simply because you have the power to do so.When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance.

“ What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied,“ Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”

Now testify against me in the presence of the Lord and before his anointed one. Whose ox or donkey have I stolen? Have I ever cheated any of you? Have I ever oppressed you? Have I ever taken a bribe and perverted justice? Tell me and I will make right whatever I have done wrong.”“ No,” they replied,“ you have never cheated or oppressed us, and you have never taken even a single bribe.”

Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice?They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.

For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.

This is what the Lord says: Be fair minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent!

You twist justice, making it a bitter pill for the oppressed. You treat the righteous like dirt.It is the Lord who created the stars, the Pleiades and Orion. He turns darkness into morning and day into night. He draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. The Lord is his name!With blinding speed and power he destroys the strong, crushing all their defenses.How you hate honest judges! How you despise people who tell the truth!You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them.For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

“ At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

God presides over heaven’s court; he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings:“ How long will you hand down unjust decisions by favoring the wicked? Interlude“ Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people.But these oppressors know nothing; they are so ignorant! They wander about in darkness, while the whole world is shaken to the core.

If you take your neighbor’s cloak as security for a loan, you must return it before sunset.This coat may be the only blanket your neighbor has. How can a person sleep without it? If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am merciful.
