正如經上所記：『我愛了雅各，少愛以掃。』這樣，我們怎麼說呢？難道在上帝還有不公平麼？斷乎沒有。因為他對摩西說：『我要體恤誰，就體恤誰；我要憐憫誰，就憐憫誰。』這便不是在乎那意願的，也不是在乎那奔跑的，乃是在乎那憐恤人的上帝了。因為經上有話對法老說：『我將你舉起來，正是要證顯我的權能在你身上，並在全地上遍傳我的名。』這便是他不但願意憐恤誰，就憐恤誰、而且願意叫誰剛愎、就叫誰剛愎了。這樣，你必對我說：『他為甚麼還指摘人呢？誰反對過他的主意呢？』但是人哪，你到底是誰，你這跟上帝頂嘴的？被塑造的哪能對塑造他的說：「你為甚麼造我像這樣呢？」窰匠對泥土難道沒有權柄從同一團泥作器皿，有的作成貴重的，有的作成下賤的麼？倘若上帝雖有意要證顯他的義怒，播知他的能力，卻用大恆忍寬容那應受義怒的、準備進入滅亡的、器皿，為要播知他榮耀之豐富是賜給那蒙憐憫的、那早豫備好了、可進入「榮耀」的、器皿，就怎麼樣呢？他所寬容的
