Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.

Four large animals came up out of the sea. Each one was different from the others.

And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.

Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, and on its horns were ten diadem crowns, and on its heads a blasphemous name.

‘ These large beasts, which are four in number, represent four kings who will arise from the earth.

“ The first one was like a lion with eagles’ wings. As I watched, its wings were pulled off and it was lifted up from the ground. It was made to stand on two feet like a human being, and a human mind was given to it.“ Then a second beast appeared, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and there were three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told,‘ Get up and devour much flesh!’“ After these things, as I was watching, another beast like a leopard appeared, with four bird- like wings on its back. This beast had four heads, and ruling authority was given to it.“ After these things, as I was watching in the night visions a fourth beast appeared– one dreadful, terrible, and very strong. It had two large rows of iron teeth. It devoured and crushed, and anything that was left it trampled with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that came before it, and it had ten horns.“ As I was contemplating the horns, another horn– a small one– came up between them, and three of the former horns were torn out by the roots to make room for it. This horn had eyes resembling human eyes and a mouth speaking arrogant things.

Once more I looked, and this time I saw four chariots emerging from between two mountains of bronze.Harnessed to the first chariot were red horses, to the second black horses,to the third white horses, and to the fourth spotted horses, all of them strong.Then I asked the angelic messenger who was speaking with me,“ What are these, sir?”The messenger replied,“ These are the four spirits of heaven that have been presenting themselves before the Lord of all the earth.The chariot with the black horses is going to the north country and the white ones are going after them, but the spotted ones are going to the south country.All these strong ones are scattering; they have sought permission to go and walk about over the earth.” The Lord had said,“ Go! Walk about over the earth!” So they are doing so.Then he cried out to me,“ Look! The ones going to the northland have brought me peace about the northland.”

She reared one of her cubs; he became a young lion. He learned to tear prey; he devoured people.The nations heard about him; he was trapped in their pit. They brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt.“‘ When she realized that she waited in vain, her hope was lost. She took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.He walked about among the lions; he became a young lion. He learned to tear prey; he devoured people.He broke down their strongholds and devastated their cities. The land and everything in it was frightened at the sound of his roaring.The nations– the surrounding regions– attacked him. They threw their net over him; he was caught in their pit.

As for that statue, its head was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs were of bronze.Its legs were of iron; its feet were partly of iron and partly of clay.

You shine brightly and reveal your majesty, as you descend from the hills where you killed your prey.

“ You, O king, are the king of kings. The God of heaven has granted you sovereignty, power, strength, and honor.Wherever human beings, wild animals, and birds of the sky live– he has given them into your power. He has given you authority over them all. You are the head of gold.Now after you another kingdom will arise, one inferior to yours. Then a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule in all the earth.Then there will be a fourth kingdom, one strong like iron. Just like iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything, and as iron breaks in pieces all of these metals, so it will break in pieces and crush the others.
