Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, And cast off all pity; His anger tore perpetually, And he kept his wrath forever.

耶和華曰、以東干罪、至三至四、我不挽回厥罰、以其以刃追襲昆弟、絕無矜憫、發忿傷人不已、怒氣恆懷也、

耶和華又曰、以東犯罪、至三至四、更逐兄弟、擊之以刃、絕無矜憫、挾怨傷人、藏怒不已、故我必罰其罪、

主如是云、以東人犯罪、至三至四、更以刃追弟、棄絕矜憫、永遠發怒、恆忿不已、故我降罰以報之、必不挽回、

This is what the Lord says:“ For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked,

The Lord says,“ The people of Edom have sinned again and again. So I will judge them. They chased Israel with swords that were ready to strike them down. They killed the women of the land. They were angry all the time. Their anger was like a fire that blazed out. It could not be stopped.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.

This is what the Lord says:“ The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords, showing them no mercy. In their rage, they slashed them continually and were unrelenting in their anger.

The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Edom for three crimes, even four, because he pursued his brother with the sword. He stifled his compassion, his anger tore at him continually, and he harbored his rage incessantly.

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword And stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.

Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.

This is what the LORD says:“ Because Edom has committed three crimes– make that four!– I will not revoke my decree of judgment. He chased his brother with a sword; he wiped out his allies. In his anger he tore them apart without stopping to rest; in his fury he relentlessly attacked them.

Yahweh says:“ For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually, and he kept his wrath forever;

‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,”therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ I will also stretch out My hand against Edom, cut off man and beast from it, and make it desolate from Teman; Dedan shall fall by the sword.I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel, that they may do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance,” says the Lord GOD.

For again the Edomites had come, attacked Judah, and carried away captives.

Now Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom.“ Thus says your brother Israel:‘ You know all the hardship that has befallen us,how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers.When we cried out to the Lord, He heard our voice and sent the Angel and brought us up out of Egypt; now here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your border.Please let us pass through your country. We will not pass through fields or vineyards, nor will we drink water from wells; we will go along the King’s Highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.’”Then Edom said to him,“ You shall not pass through my land, lest I come out against you with the sword.”So the children of Israel said to him,“ We will go by the Highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, then I will pay for it; let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.”Then he said,“ You shall not pass through.” So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so Israel turned away from him.

Even though Edom has said,“ We have been impoverished, But we will return and build the desolate places,” Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the Lord will have indignation forever.

Against Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, The time that I will punish him.If grape-gatherers came to you, Would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves by night, Would they not destroy until they have enough?But I have made Esau bare; I have uncovered his secret places, And he shall not be able to hide himself. His descendants are plundered, His brethren and his neighbors, And he is no more.Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.”For thus says the Lord:“ Behold, those whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunk. And are you the one who will altogether go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it.For I have sworn by Myself,” says the Lord,“ that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.”I have heard a message from the Lord, And an ambassador has been sent to the nations:“ Gather together, come against her, And rise up to battle!“ For indeed, I will make you small among nations, Despised among men.Your fierceness has deceived you, The pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Who hold the height of the hill! Though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.“ Edom also shall be an astonishment; Everyone who goes by it will be astonished And will hiss at all its plagues.As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah And their neighbors,” says the Lord,“ No one shall remain there, Nor shall a son of man dwell in it.“ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan Against the dwelling place of the strong; But I will suddenly make him run away from her. And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her? For who is like Me? Who will arraign Me? And who is that shepherd Who will withstand Me?”Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord that He has taken against Edom, And His purposes that He has proposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; Surely He shall make their dwelling places desolate with them.The earth shakes at the noise of their fall; At the cry its noise is heard at the Red Sea.Behold, He shall come up and fly like the eagle, And spread His wings over Bozrah; The heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be Like the heart of a woman in birth pangs.

Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Who said,“ Raze it, raze it, To its very foundation!”

“ Egypt shall be a desolation, And Edom a desolate wilderness, Because of violence against the people of Judah, For they have shed innocent blood in their land.

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom( We have heard a report from the Lord, And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,“ Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle”):“ Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You shall be greatly despised.The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart,‘ Who will bring me down to the ground?’Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” says the Lord.“ If thieves had come to you, If robbers by night— Oh, how you will be cut off!— Would they not have stolen till they had enough? If grape-gatherers had come to you, Would they not have left some gleanings?“ Oh, how Esau shall be searched out! How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!All the men in your confederacy Shall force you to the border; The men at peace with you Shall deceive you and prevail against you. Those who eat your bread shall lay a trap for you. No one is aware of it.“ Will I not in that day,” says the Lord,“ Even destroy the wise men from Edom, And understanding from the mountains of Esau?Then your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau May be cut off by slaughter.“ For violence against your brother Jacob, Shame shall cover you, And you shall be cut off forever.In the day that you stood on the other side— In the day that strangers carried captive his forces, When foreigners entered his gates And cast lots for Jerusalem— Even you were as one of them.“ But you should not have gazed on the day of your brother In the day of his captivity; Nor should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah In the day of their destruction; Nor should you have spoken proudly In the day of distress.You should not have entered the gate of My people In the day of their calamity. Indeed, you should not have gazed on their affliction In the day of their calamity, Nor laid hands on their substance In the day of their calamity.You should not have stood at the crossroads To cut off those among them who escaped; Nor should you have delivered up those among them who remained In the day of distress.

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it,and say to it,‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Behold, O Mount Seir, I am against you; I will stretch out My hand against you, And make you most desolate;I shall lay your cities waste, And you shall be desolate. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.“ Because you have had an ancient hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, when their iniquity came to an end,therefore, as I live,” says the Lord GOD,“ I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; since you have not hated blood, therefore blood shall pursue you.Thus I will make Mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it the one who leaves and the one who returns.And I will fill its mountains with the slain; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those who are slain by the sword shall fall.I will make you perpetually desolate, and your cities shall be uninhabited; then you shall know that I am the Lord.“ Because you have said,‘ These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them,’ although the Lord was there,therefore, as I live,” says the Lord GOD,“ I will do according to your anger and according to the envy which you showed in your hatred against them; and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you.Then you shall know that I am the Lord. I have heard all your blasphemies which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying,‘ They are desolate; they are given to us to consume.’Thus with your mouth you have boasted against Me and multiplied your words against Me; I have heard them.”‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ The whole earth will rejoice when I make you desolate.As you rejoiced because the inheritance of the house of Israel was desolate, so I will do to you; you shall be desolate, O Mount Seir, as well as all of Edom— all of it! Then they shall know that I am the Lord.”’

Who is this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This One who is glorious in His apparel, Traveling in the greatness of His strength?—“ I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?“ I have trodden the winepress alone, And from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes.For the day of vengeance is in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come.I looked, but there was no one to help, And I wondered That there was no one to uphold; Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me; And My own fury, it sustained Me.I have trodden down the peoples in My anger, Made them drunk in My fury, And brought down their strength to the earth.”I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord And the praises of the Lord, According to all that the Lord has bestowed on us, And the great goodness toward the house of Israel, Which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, According to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.

Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools.

And command the people, saying,“ You are about to pass through the territory of your brethren, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully.Do not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.You shall buy food from them with money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink.“ For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”’“ And when we passed beyond our brethren, the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir, away from the road of the plain, away from Elath and Ezion Geber, we turned and passed by way of the Wilderness of Moab.

“ You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land.

They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.They have said,“ Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You:The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites;Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot. Selah

Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck.”So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart,“ The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

The burden against Dumah. He calls to me out of Seir,“ Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?”The watchman said,“ The morning comes, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire; Return! Come back!”

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, You who dwell in the land of Uz! The cup shall also pass over to you And you shall become drunk and make yourself naked.The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; He will no longer send you into captivity. He will punish your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will uncover your sins!

Come near, you nations, to hear; And heed, you people! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, The world and all things that come forth from it.For the indignation of the Lord is against all nations, And His fury against all their armies; He has utterly destroyed them, He has given them over to the slaughter.Also their slain shall be thrown out; Their stench shall rise from their corpses, And the mountains shall be melted with their blood.All the host of heaven shall be dissolved, And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll; All their host shall fall down As the leaf falls from the vine, And as fruit falling from a fig tree.“ For My sword shall be bathed in heaven; Indeed it shall come down on Edom, And on the people of My curse, for judgment.The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, It is made overflowing with fatness, With the blood of lambs and goats, With the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.The wild oxen shall come down with them, And the young bulls with the mighty bulls; Their land shall be soaked with blood, And their dust saturated with fatness.”For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, The year of recompense for the cause of Zion.Its streams shall be turned into pitch, And its dust into brimstone; Its land shall become burning pitch.It shall not be quenched night or day; Its smoke shall ascend forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; No one shall pass through it forever and ever.But the pelican and the porcupine shall possess it, Also the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. And He shall stretch out over it The line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, But none shall be there, and all its princes shall be nothing.And thorns shall come up in its palaces, Nettles and brambles in its fortresses; It shall be a habitation of jackals, A courtyard for ostriches.The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the jackals, And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion; Also the night creature shall rest there, And find for herself a place of rest.There the arrow snake shall make her nest and lay eggs And hatch, and gather them under her shadow; There also shall the hawks be gathered, Every one with her mate.“ Search from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these shall fail; Not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.He has cast the lot for them, And His hand has divided it among them with a measuring line. They shall possess it forever; From generation to generation they shall dwell in it.”

For I will not contend forever, Nor will I always be angry; For the spirit would fail before Me, And the souls which I have made.

“ Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,nor give place to the devil.

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord.“ Yet you say,‘ In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord.“ Yet Jacob I have loved;

Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
