I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to hand over anyone before the accused had met his accusers face to face and had been given an opportunity to make a defense against the accusation.

So Pilate came outside to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this man?”They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

But I found that he had done nothing that deserved death, and when he appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.

But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews,“ If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, I would have been justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews,

Look, my father, and see the edge of your robe in my hand! When I cut off the edge of your robe, I didn’t kill you. So realize and understand that I am not planning evil or rebellion. Even though I have not sinned against you, you are waiting in ambush to take my life.May the LORD judge between the two of us, and may the LORD vindicate me over you, but my hand will not be against you.

When his accusers stood up, they did not charge him with any of the evil deeds I had suspected.Rather they had several points of disagreement with him about their own religion and about a man named Jesus who was dead, whom Paul claimed to be alive.

O LORD my God, if I have done what they say, or am guilty of unjust actions,or have wronged my ally, or helped his lawless enemy,may an enemy relentlessly chase me and catch me; may he trample me to death and leave me lying dishonored in the dust.( Selah)

When I was informed there would be a plot against this man, I sent him to you at once, also ordering his accusers to state their charges against him before you.

When you examine him yourself, you will be able to learn from him about all these things we are accusing him of doing.”
