Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.

Paul wanted to appear in front of the crowd. But the believers wouldn’t let him.

But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.

Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said:“ Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect.For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.The God who made the world and everything in it— He is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in shrines made by hands.Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.From one man He has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.For in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said,‘ For we are also His offspring.’Being God’s offspring then, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.“ Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent,because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”

But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him:“ You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”

Paul said,“ I am a Jewish man from Tarsus of Cilicia, a citizen of an important city. Now I ask you, let me speak to the people.”

He then sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the troops,“ I will also march out with you.”“ You must not go!” the people pleaded.“ If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth 10,000 of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.”

The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting:“ Men! Why are you doing these things? We are men also, with the same nature as you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.In past generations He allowed all the nations to go their own way,although He did not leave Himself without a witness, since He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness.”Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.
