Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said:“ People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.

So Paul stood before the Areopagus and said,“ Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects.

but had some questions against him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, who had died, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said:“ Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

A drought is against her waters, and they will be dried up. For it is the land of carved images, And they are insane with their idols.

Thus says the Lord:“ Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols.
