Why do you wrong each other?’But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.“ Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:‘ I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.Then the Lord said to him,‘ Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:“‘ Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’“ Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.But it was Solomon who built a house for him.Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,“‘ Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?Did not my hand make all these things?’“ You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”

But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day.

You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham.You found his heart faithful before you, and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.“ And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea,and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day.And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters.By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying,“ I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name.“ Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone.Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries; you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble.At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.The enemy said,‘ I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters.“ Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them.“ You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.The peoples have heard; they tremble; pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia.Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; trembling seizes the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your people, O Lord, pass by, till the people pass by whom you have purchased.You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.The Lord will reign forever and ever.”For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea.Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing.And Miriam sang to them:“ Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,

the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So will the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness.

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.Then he remembered the days of old, of Moses and his people. Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Like a horse in the desert, they did not stumble.Like livestock that go down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.

And when in time to come your son asks you,‘ What does this mean?’ you shall say to him,‘ By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. SelahWhen the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled.The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side.The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

But the Lord said to Moses,“ Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”God spoke to Moses and said to him,“ I am the Lord.I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners.Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant.Say therefore to the people of Israel,‘ I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’”Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.So the Lord said to Moses,“ Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the people of Israel go out of his land.”But Moses said to the Lord,“ Behold, the people of Israel have not listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?”But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge about the people of Israel and about Pharaoh king of Egypt: to bring the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt.These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the clans of Reuben.

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.And he said to his people,“ Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.

They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

You have shown signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and to this day in Israel and among all mankind, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day.You brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and outstretched arm, and with great terror.

He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and of beast;who in your midst, O Egypt, sent signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants;who struck down many nations and killed mighty kings,

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.”

As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things.The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hands on their mouths; their ears shall be deaf;

Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Now the Lord said to Abram,“ Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

“ But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!

For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant.So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing.

Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

“ Have you not observed that these people are saying,‘ The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight.Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.”

In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.

And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power,

For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.They performed his signs among them and miracles in the land of Ham.He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words.He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die.Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings.He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.He gave them hail for rain, and fiery lightning bolts through their land.He struck down their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number,which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground.He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength.Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it.He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.

When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back.The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back?O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.
