With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,“ The voice of one shouting in the wilderness:‘ Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth,and all humanity will see the salvation of God.’”So John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him,“ You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance, and don’t begin to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”So the crowds were asking him,“ What then should we do?”John answered them,“ The person who has two tunics must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise.”Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him,“ Teacher, what should we do?”He told them,“ Collect no more than you are required to.”Then some soldiers also asked him,“ And as for us– what should we do?” He told them,“ Take money from no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your pay.”While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming– I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,“ Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,‘ Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.’”In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.People from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.John wore a garment made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him,

Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all the people of Israel.But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly,‘ What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’

These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing.On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!This is the one about whom I said,‘ After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”Then John testified,“ I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me,‘ The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining– this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said,“ Look, the Lamb of God!”When John’s two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them,“ What do you want?” So they said to him,“ Rabbi”( which is translated Teacher),“ where are you staying?”Jesus answered,“ Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o’clock in the afternoon.Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus.He first found his own brother Simon and told him,“ We have found the Messiah!”( which is translated Christ).Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,“ You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas”( which is translated Peter).On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,“ Follow me.”( Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)Philip found Nathanael and told him,“ We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about– Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”Nathanael replied,“ Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied,“ Come and see.”Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed,“ Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”Nathanael asked him,“ How do you know me?” Jesus replied,“ Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”Nathanael answered him,“ Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!”Jesus said to him,“ Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”He continued,“ I tell all of you the solemn truth– you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
