he went and took the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead.( They had stolen their bodies from the public square at Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.)

That’s where the Philistines had hung their bodies up on the city wall. They had done it after they struck Saul down on Mount Gilboa.

And they put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth- shan.And when the inhabitants of Jabesh- gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul,all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth- shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk- tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth- shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En- dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, even the three heights.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

Ye mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh- gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
