約拿單對拿兵器的青年說：「來，我們過去到那些未受割禮之人的駐軍那裏，或者耶和華為我們施展能力，因為耶和華使人得勝，不在乎人多人少。」拿兵器的對他說：「隨你的心意做吧。你上去，看哪，我一定跟隨你，與你同心。」約拿單說：「看哪，我們要過去到那些人那裏，在他們那裏展現我們自己。他們若對我們這麼說：『站住，等我們到你們那裏去』，我們就站在原地，不上他們那裏去；但他們若這麼說：『上到我們這裏來吧』，我們就上去，因為耶和華把他們交在我們手裏了。這就是我們的憑據。」二人就讓非利士的駐軍看見。非利士人說：「看哪，希伯來人從躲藏的洞穴裏出來了！」站崗的士兵對約拿單和拿兵器的人說：「上到這裏來，我們有一件事要告訴你們。」約拿單就對拿兵器的人說：「跟我上去，因為耶和華把他們交在以色列人手裏了。」約拿單手腳並用爬上去，拿兵器的人跟隨他。非利士人仆倒在約拿單面前，拿兵器的人跟着他，殺死他們。約拿單和拿兵器的人第一次擊殺的約有二十人，都在一畝地的半犁溝之內。

我要使我的箭飲血而醉，就是被殺被擄之人的血；我的刀也要吃肉，就是仇敵披髮頭顱的肉。』
