But the Lord said to Moses,“ If her father had done nothing more than spit in her face, wouldn’t she be defiled for seven days? So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.”

“ Then the people will say,‘ Why should we wait here to die? Come, let’s go to the fortified towns and die there. For the Lord our God has decreed our destruction and has given us a cup of poison to drink because we sinned against the Lord.

As she came in, the king was talking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. The king had just said,“ Tell me some stories about the great things Elisha has done.”

“ Those who suffer from a serious skin disease must tear their clothing and leave their hair uncombed. They must cover their mouth and call out,‘ Unclean! Unclean!’As long as the serious disease lasts, they will be ceremonially unclean. They must live in isolation in their place outside the camp.

“ We will starve if we stay here, but with the famine in the city, we will starve if we go back there. So we might as well go out and surrender to the Aramean army. If they let us live, so much the better. But if they kill us, we would have died anyway.”

The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the commander of his army, because through him the Lord had given Aram great victories. But though Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy.

Why do you insist on dying— you and your people? Why should you choose war, famine, and disease, which the Lord will bring against every nation that refuses to submit to Babylon’s king?
