Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

他們把自己的兒子和女兒祭獻給鬼魔；他們流無辜人的血，就是自己兒子和女兒的血，把他們祭獻給迦南的偶像，那地就被血玷汙了。

掃羅說：「我們要趁夜下去追趕非利士人，掠奪他們直到天亮，不讓他們一人存留。」軍兵說：「你看怎樣好就怎樣做吧！」但祭司說：「讓我們在這裡求問神。」掃羅就求問神：「我可以下去追趕非利士人嗎？你會把他們交在以色列人手中嗎？」那一天，神沒有回應他。掃羅說：「所有軍兵的首領，你們都上這裡來，要查看今天這罪是怎麼發生的！我指著拯救以色列的耶和華的永生起誓：即使罪在我的兒子約拿單，他也必須死！」全體軍兵中沒有人回應他。他對全體以色列人說：「你們站在這一邊，我和我兒子約拿單在那一邊。」軍兵對掃羅說：「你看怎樣好就怎樣做吧！」掃羅對耶和華以色列的神說：「求你指明正確的抽籤結果！」於是約拿單和掃羅被抽中，軍兵都脫罪了。掃羅說：「在我和我兒子約拿單之間抽籤吧。」結果約拿單被抽中了。掃羅對約拿單說：「告訴我，你做了什麼？」約拿單就告訴他說：「我只是用手杖尖蘸了一點蜂蜜吃，我這樣就必須死嗎？」掃羅說：「約拿單，你必須死，否則願神處置我，重重地處置我！」軍兵對掃羅說：「約拿單為以色列成就了這樣大的拯救，怎麼可以死呢？絕對不可！我們指著耶和華的永生起誓：連他的一根頭髮也不可落在地上！因為他今天是與神一同行事。」這樣，人們救了約拿單，他就免於一死；掃羅回去，不再追趕非利士人，非利士人也回自己的地方去了。

神說：「帶上你的兒子，就是你所愛的獨生子以撒，往摩利亞地去；在我將要指示你的山上，把他獻為燔祭。」

亞伯拉罕舉目觀看，看哪，身後有一隻公綿羊，犄角被灌木叢纏住了！亞伯拉罕就走過去，取了那隻公綿羊，代替自己的兒子獻為燔祭。
