Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

Then the king of Moab took his oldest son. He was the son who would become the next king of Moab. But the king offered his son as a sacrifice on the city wall. That shocked and terrified the men of Israel. So they pulled back and returned to their own land.

Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.

耶和華會喜愛成千的公羊和萬條油河嗎？我要因過犯而獻上自己的長子，因心中的罪惡而獻上親生的骨肉嗎？

你們不可按照他們的方式敬拜你們的上帝耶和華。他們祭拜自己神明的種種行為令耶和華憎惡，他們甚至焚燒自己的兒女獻給他們的神明。

讓我凱旋而歸，第一個從我家門出來迎接我的人必歸給你，我必把他獻給你作燔祭。」

你還把你給我生的兒女燒作燔祭獻給偶像。難道你淫亂還不夠嗎？

耶和華說：「摩押人三番四次地犯罪，我必不收回對他們的懲罰，因為他們把以東王的骸骨焚燒成灰。

他們把自己的兒女當祭物獻給鬼魔，他們把自己的兒女獻給迦南的神像作祭物，流他們兒女無辜的血，玷污了那地方。

他對以色列人說：「讓我們連夜追趕非利士人，搶奪他們的財物，直到天亮，把他們全部殲滅。」眾人答道：「就照你的意思。」但祭司說：「讓我們先來求問上帝吧。」於是，掃羅求問上帝，說：「耶和華啊，我們可以去追殺非利士人嗎？你會把他們交在以色列人手裡嗎？」但耶和華那日沒有回答他。掃羅說：「你們這些百姓的首領到這裡來，我們要查出今天究竟誰犯了罪，我憑拯救以色列的永活的耶和華起誓，就是我兒子約拿單犯了罪，他也要死！」眾人都默不作聲。掃羅對以色列眾人說：「你們站在這邊，我和我的兒子約拿單站在那邊。」眾人答道：「就照你的意思。」掃羅向以色列的上帝耶和華禱告說：「請你把實情告訴我吧。」抽籤的結果是約拿單和掃羅犯了罪，民眾都是無辜的。掃羅和約拿單二人再抽籤，結果抽出了約拿單。掃羅對約拿單說：「告訴我，你做了什麼事？」約拿單說：「我只不過用手中的杖蘸了一點蜂蜜吃，就得死嗎？」掃羅說：「約拿單啊，你必須死。否則，願上帝重重地懲罰我。」但眾人對掃羅說：「今天約拿單給以色列人帶來這麼大的勝利，難道要他死嗎？絕對不可以！我們憑永活的耶和華起誓，絕不可動他一根頭髮，因為他今天的行動有上帝的幫助。」眾人就這樣救了約拿單的性命。掃羅便停止了追擊，非利士人也回本地去了。

以色列王悶悶不樂地回撒瑪利亞的王宮去了。

上帝說：「帶著你的兒子，你的獨生子，你疼愛的以撒前往摩利亞，在我指示你的山上把他獻為燔祭。」

兩個月後，她回到父親那裡。她父親履行了自己所許的願。她終身未嫁。自此以後，在以色列有個習俗：

一位先知來見以色列王亞哈，說：「耶和華說，『你看見這大隊人馬了嗎？今天我必將他們交在你手裡，這樣你就知道我是耶和華。』」

這時亞伯拉罕抬起頭來，突然看見有一隻公綿羊兩角卡在稠密的樹叢中，於是把羊取來代替他的兒子獻為燔祭。

有位上帝的僕人來見以色列王，說：「耶和華說，『亞蘭人以為我耶和華是山神，不是平原的神，所以我必將這大隊人馬交在你手裡，這樣你們就知道我是耶和華。』」
