Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’

That’s because the people have deserted me. They have burned incense to other gods. They have made me very angry because of the statues of gods their hands have made. So my anger will burn like a fire against this place. And the fire of my anger will not be put out.’ ” ’

Has a nation ever exchanged its gods?( But they were not gods!) Yet my people have exchanged their Glory for useless idols.Be appalled at this, heavens; be shocked and utterly desolated! This is the LORD’s declaration.For my people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves— cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.

The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling seizes the ungodly:“ Who among us can dwell with a consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with ever-burning flames?”

say to a tree,“ You are my father,” and to a stone,“ You gave birth to me.” For they have turned their back to me and not their face, yet in their time of disaster they beg,“ Rise up and save us!”But where are your gods you made for yourself? Let them rise up and save you in your time of disaster if they can, for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.

Then the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. They abandoned the LORD and did not worship him.So the LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to the Philistines and the Ammonites.

but mingled with the nations and adopted their ways.They served their idols, which became a snare to them.They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; so the land became polluted with blood.They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds.Therefore the LORD’s anger burned against his people, and he abhorred his own inheritance.He handed them over to the nations; those who hated them ruled over them.Their enemies oppressed them, and they were subdued under their power.

and say to the forest there,‘ Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to ignite a fire in you, and it will devour every green tree and every dry tree in you. The blazing flame will not be extinguished, and every face from the south to the north will be scorched by it.Then all humanity will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it. It will not be extinguished.’”

But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.So you handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. In their time of distress, they cried out to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the power of their enemies.

Their silver and their gold will be unable to rescue them on the day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of his jealousy, for he will make a complete, yes, a horrifying end of all the inhabitants of the earth.

“ To whom will you compare me or make me equal? Who will you measure me with, so that we should be like each other?Those who pour out their bags of gold and weigh out silver on scales— they hire a goldsmith and he makes it into a god. Then they kneel and bow down to it.They lift it to their shoulder and bear it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands; it does not budge from its place. They cry out to it but it doesn’t answer; it saves no one from his trouble.“ Remember this and be brave; take it to heart, you transgressors!

by keeping us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. As a result, they are constantly filling up their sins to the limit, and wrath has overtaken them at last.

All the nations will ask,‘ Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’Then people will answer,‘ It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known— gods that the LORD had not permitted them to worship.Therefore the LORD’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it.The LORD uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’

But if you do not listen to me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, I will set fire to its gates, and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem and not be extinguished.’”

He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it. He bows down to it and worships; he prays to it,“ Save me, for you are my god.”Such people do not comprehend and cannot understand, for he has shut their eyes so they cannot see, and their minds so they cannot understand.No one comes to his senses; no one has the perception or insight to say,“ I burned half of it in the fire, I also baked bread on its coals, I roasted meat and ate. Should I make something detestable with the rest of it? Should I bow down to a block of wood?”He feeds on ashes. His deceived mind has led him astray, and he cannot rescue himself, or say,“ Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

Their land is full of worthless idols; they worship the work of their hands, what their fingers have made.So humanity is brought low, and each person is humbled. Do not forgive them!

The Israelites did what was evil in the LORD’s sight; they forgot the LORD their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.

and abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They angered the LORD,for they abandoned him and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths.The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies.

Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about; see, my angel will go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will hold them accountable for their sin.”

Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says:“ Look, my anger— my burning wrath— is about to be poured out on this place, on people and animals, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.”

If you or your sons turn away from following me and do not keep my commands— my statutes that I have set before you— and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them, and I will reject the temple I have sanctified for my name. Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.Though this temple is now exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will scoff. They will say,“ Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple?”Then they will say,“ Because they abandoned the LORD their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They held on to other gods and bowed in worship to them and served them. Because of this, the LORD brought all this ruin on them.”

so they cried out to the LORD, saying,“ We have sinned against you. We have abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals.”The LORD said to the Israelites,“ When the Egyptians, Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines,Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, did I not deliver you from them?But you have abandoned me and worshiped other gods. Therefore, I will not deliver you again.Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them deliver you whenever you are oppressed.”

But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.

I will remove your carved images and sacred pillars from you so that you will no longer worship the work of your hands.

He abandoned the LORD God of his ancestors and did not walk in the ways of the LORD.

Their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands.They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.They have ears but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.They have hands but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk. They cannot make a sound with their throats.Those who make them are just like them, as are all who trust in them.

Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled— you became fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation.They provoked his jealousy with different gods; they enraged him with detestable practices.They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known, new gods that had just arrived, which your ancestors did not fear.You ignored the Rock who gave you birth; you forgot the God who gave birth to you.When the LORD saw this, he despised them, angered by his sons and daughters.

For fire has been kindled because of my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.
