Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time.

耶和華如此說：「大馬士革三番四次犯罪，以鐵的打穀機擊打基列，我必不撤銷對它的懲罰。

在那些日子，耶和華開始削弱以色列。哈薛在以色列各邊界攻擊他們，

以色列人也召集軍兵，預備食物，去迎戰亞蘭人。以色列人對着他們安營，好像兩小羣的山羊；亞蘭人卻佈滿了地面。

那時，以色列全地找不到一個鐵匠，因為非利士人說：「恐怕希伯來人製造刀槍。」以色列眾人要磨鋤、犁、斧、鏟，就各自下到非利士人那裏去磨。磨鋤或犁的價錢是三分之二舍客勒，磨斧或修整刺棒的價錢是三分之一舍客勒。所以到了戰爭的日子，所有跟隨掃羅和約拿單的百姓找不到一個手裏有刀有槍的，惟掃羅和他兒子約拿單有。非利士人的一隊駐軍出來，到密抹的隘口。

以色列人見自己危急，軍隊被圍攻，百姓就藏在山洞、叢林、巖隙、地窖和深坑中。有些希伯來人過了約旦河，逃到迦得和基列地。掃羅還在吉甲，所有的人都戰戰兢兢地跟隨他。

於是亞哈數點跟從省長的年輕人，共二百三十二名，然後又數點以色列的眾軍兵，共七千名。

在斷定谷有許多許多的人，因為耶和華的日子臨近斷定谷了。

撒母耳就起來，從吉甲上到便雅憫的基比亞。掃羅數點跟隨他的百姓，約有六百人。

看哪，我使你成為全新的打穀機，齒輪銳利；你要把山嶺打得粉碎，使岡陵如同糠粃。你要簸揚它們，風要將它們吹去；旋風要颳散它們。你卻要以耶和華為喜樂，因以色列的聖者誇耀。

誰從東方興起一人，憑公義召他來到腳前？誰將列國交給他，使他管轄列王，把他們如灰塵交與他的刀，如風吹的碎稭交與他的弓？

哈薛說：「我主為甚麼哭？」他說：「因為我知道你必虐待以色列人，用火焚燒他們的堡壘，用刀殺死他們的壯丁，摔死他們的嬰孩，剖開他們的孕婦。」

現在你與我主亞述王打賭，我給你兩千匹馬，看你能否派得出騎士來騎牠們。

我搗碎他們，如同風前的灰塵；傾倒他們，如同街上的泥土。
