耶和华如此说：“大马士革三番四次犯罪，以铁的打谷机击打基列，我必不撤销对它的惩罚。

在那些日子，耶和华开始削弱以色列。哈薛在以色列各边界攻击他们，

那时，以色列全地找不到一个铁匠，因为非利士人说：“恐怕希伯来人制造刀枪。”以色列众人要磨锄、犁、斧、铲，就各自下到非利士人那里去磨。磨锄或犁的价钱是三分之二舍客勒，磨斧或修整刺棒的价钱是三分之一舍客勒。所以到了战争的日子，所有跟随扫罗和约拿单的百姓找不到一个手里有刀有枪的，惟扫罗和他儿子约拿单有。非利士人的一队驻军出来，到密抹的隘口。

以色列人见自己危急，军队被围攻，百姓就藏在山洞、丛林、岩隙、地窖和深坑中。有些希伯来人过了约旦河，逃到迦得和基列地。扫罗还在吉甲，所有的人都战战兢兢地跟随他。

于是亚哈数点跟从省长的年轻人，共二百三十二名，然后又数点以色列的众军兵，共七千名。

在断定谷有许多许多的人，因为耶和华的日子临近断定谷了。

撒母耳就起来，从吉甲上到便雅悯的基比亚。扫罗数点跟随他的百姓，约有六百人。

看哪，我使你成为全新的打谷机，齿轮锐利；你要把山岭打得粉碎，使冈陵如同糠秕。你要簸扬它们，风要将它们吹去；旋风要刮散它们。你却要以耶和华为喜乐，因以色列的圣者夸耀。

谁从东方兴起一人，凭公义召他来到脚前？谁将列国交给他，使他管辖列王，把他们如灰尘交与他的刀，如风吹的碎秸交与他的弓？

哈薛说：“我主为什么哭？”他说：“因为我知道你必虐待以色列人，用火焚烧他们的堡垒，用刀杀死他们的壮丁，摔死他们的婴孩，剖开他们的孕妇。”

现在你与我主亚述王打赌，我给你两千匹马，看你能否派得出骑士来骑它们。

我捣碎他们，如同风前的灰尘；倾倒他们，如同街上的泥土。
