through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

We serve God in times of glory and shame. We serve him whether the news about us is bad or good. We are true to our calling. But people treat us as if we were pretenders.

through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true;

We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.

through glory and dishonor, through slander and good report; regarded as deceivers, yet true;

by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; regarded as deceivers and yet true;

by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true;

And why not say, just as some people slanderously claim we say,“ Let us do what is evil so that good may come”? Their condemnation is deserved!

If anyone wants to do His will, he will understand whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own.The one who speaks for himself seeks his own glory. But He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

“ You are blessed when they insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me.Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we can appoint to this duty.

They sent their disciples to Him, with the Herodians.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that You are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality.

When the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another,“ This man is probably a murderer, and though he has escaped the sea, Justice does not allow him to live!”However, he shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.They expected that he would swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after they waited a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.Now in the area around that place was an estate belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably for three days.Publius’s father was in bed suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, and praying and laying his hands on him, he healed him.After this, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were cured.So they heaped many honors on us, and when we sailed, they gave us what we needed.

It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house‘ Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!

Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jewsand are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.”Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;we labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the world’s garbage, like the dirt everyone scrapes off their sandals.

But we would like to hear from you what you think. For concerning this sect, we are aware that it is spoken against everywhere.”

For we have found this man to be a plague, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the Roman world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes!

If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

In fact, we labor and strive for this, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of everyone, especially of those who believe.

Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the Devil’s trap.

Take note! I will make those from the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews and are not, but are lying— note this— I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I have loved you.

So they came and apologized to them, and escorting them out, they urged them to leave town.

When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language,“ The gods have come down to us in the form of men!”And they started to call Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the main speaker.Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the town, brought oxen and garlands to the gates. He, with the crowds, intended to offer sacrifice.The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting:“ Men! Why are you doing these things? We are men also, with the same nature as you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.In past generations He allowed all the nations to go their own way,although He did not leave Himself without a witness, since He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness.”Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.After the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

When they came, they said to Him,“ Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

None of the rest dared to join them, but the people praised them highly.

And there was a lot of discussion about Him among the crowds. Some were saying,“ He’s a good man.” Others were saying,“ No, on the contrary, He’s deceiving the people.”

After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done;

“ A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. (niv)

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. (niv)

Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. (niv)

The men replied,“ We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God- fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” (niv)
