昔特書此、恐我來時所當使我樂者、反令我憂、蓋我深信爾眾以我樂為樂也、

此點吾在前書中亦曾提及、以免吾來之時、應使我歡欣鼓舞者、反貽我以憂戚耳。且吾固深信爾等莫不以吾之樂為樂也。

I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

What I wrote to you I wrote for a special reason. When I came, I didn’t want to be troubled by those who should make me glad. I was sure that all of you would share my joy.

And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all.

That is why I wrote to you as I did, so that when I do come, I won’t be grieved by the very ones who ought to give me the greatest joy. Surely you all know that my joy comes from your being joyful.

I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.

Since I was confident that you would obey, I wrote to you, because I knew that you would do even more than what I am asking you to do.

I am afraid that when I come again, my God may humiliate me before you, and I will grieve for many of those who previously sinned and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and licentiousness that they have practiced.This is the third time I am coming to visit you. By the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter will be established.I said before when I was present the second time and now, though absent, I say again to those who sinned previously and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare anyone,

For even if I made you sad by my letter, I do not regret having written it( even though I did regret it, for I see that my letter made you sad, though only for a short time).

And with this confidence I intended to come to you first so that you would get a second opportunity to see us,

And we are confident about you in the Lord that you are both doing– and will do– what we are commanding.

What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline or with love and a spirit of gentleness?It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, the kind of immorality that is not permitted even among the Gentiles, so that someone is cohabiting with his father’s wife.And you are proud! Shouldn’t you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed the one who did this from among you?For even though I am absent physically, I am present in spirit. And I have already judged the one who did this, just as though I were present.When you gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus,turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast affects the whole batch of dough?Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough– you are, in fact, without yeast. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world.But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Are you not to judge those inside?But God will judge those outside. Remove the evil person from among you.

So then, even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did wrong, or on account of the one who was wronged, but to reveal to you your eagerness on our behalf before God.

But God, who encourages the downhearted, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.

I have become a fool. You yourselves forced me to do it, for I should have been commended by you. For I lack nothing in comparison to those“ super- apostles,” even though I am nothing.
