昔特書此、恐我來時所當使我樂者、反令我憂、蓋我深信爾眾以我樂為樂也、

昔我以書達爾、恐來時所當使我樂者、轉令我憂耳、蓋我樂即爾樂、吾知之素矣、

蓋我深知爾眾以我之樂為己之樂、

此點吾在前書中亦曾提及、以免吾來之時、應使我歡欣鼓舞者、反貽我以憂戚耳。且吾固深信爾等莫不以吾之樂為樂也。

I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

What I wrote to you I wrote for a special reason. When I came, I didn’t want to be troubled by those who should make me glad. I was sure that all of you would share my joy.

And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all.

That is why I wrote to you as I did, so that when I do come, I won’t be grieved by the very ones who ought to give me the greatest joy. Surely you all know that my joy comes from your being joyful.

I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.

This is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy was the joy of you all.

lest again when I come my God should humble me before you, and I should mourn for many of them that have sinned heretofore, and repented not of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they committed.This is the third time I am coming to you. At the mouth of two witnesses or three shall every word be established.I have said beforehand, and I do say beforehand, as when I was present the second time, so now, being absent, to them that have sinned heretofore, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare;

For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it: though I did regret it( for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season),

And in this confidence I was minded to come first unto you, that ye might have a second benefit;

And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command.

What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?It is actually reported that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not even among the Gentiles, that one of you hath his father’s wife.And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you.For I verily, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already as though I were present judged him that hath so wrought this thing,in the name of our Lord Jesus, ye being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?Purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, even as ye are unleavened. For our passover also hath been sacrificed, even Christ:wherefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators;not at all meaning with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world:but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no, not to eat.For what have I to do with judging them that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within?But them that are without God judgeth. Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.

So although I wrote unto you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be made manifest unto you in the sight of God.

Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.
