There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

There wasn’t anything in the ark except the two tablets. Moses had placed them in it at Mount Horeb. That’s where the Lord had made a covenant with the Israelites. He made it after they came out of Egypt.

When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God. (niv)

Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. (niv)

The Lord said to Moses,“ Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. (niv)

When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. (niv)

He took the tablets of the covenant law and placed them in the ark, attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover over it. (niv)

All of you are standing today in the presence of the Lord your God— your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel,together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath,to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you (niv)

These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. (niv)

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded,“ We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.” (niv)
