「『但我們的祖先行事狂傲，硬着頸項不聽從你的誡命。他們不肯順從，也不記念你在他們中間所行的奇事，竟硬着頸項，居心悖逆，自立領袖，要回埃及他們為奴之地。但你是樂意饒恕人，有恩惠，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛慈愛的神，並沒有丟棄他們。

於是約書亞與他們建立和好關係，與他們立約，讓他們存活；會眾的領袖也向他們起誓。

因為我知道你是頑梗的；你的頸項是鐵的，你的額頭是銅的。

還是你藐視他豐富的恩慈、寬容、忍耐，不知道他的恩慈是領你悔改嗎？你竟放任你剛硬不悔改的心，為自己累積憤怒！在憤怒的日子，神公義的審判要顯示出來。

但法老見災禍舒緩了，就硬着心，不聽從他們，正如耶和華所說的。

耶和華的話臨到我，說：「你要對那悖逆之家說：你們不知道這些事是甚麼意思嗎？你要這樣說，看哪，巴比倫王曾到耶路撒冷，把其中的君王和官長帶到巴比倫去，又從以色列王室後裔中選取一人，與他立約，令他發誓，又擄走國中有勢力的人，使王國衰弱，不再強盛，只能靠守盟約方得生存。他卻背叛巴比倫王，差派使者前往埃及，要求埃及人給他馬匹和許多人。他豈能亨通呢？這樣做的人豈能逃脫呢？他背了約豈能逃脫呢？主耶和華說：我指着我的永生起誓，他定要死在巴比倫，就是巴比倫王所在之處；因為巴比倫王立他為王，他竟輕看向王所起的誓，背棄王與他所立的約。當敵人建土堆，築堡壘，要殲滅許多人時，法老雖有強大軍隊和大批人馬，在戰場上還是不能幫助他。他輕看誓言，背棄盟約，看哪，雖已投降，卻又做這一切的事，他必不能逃脫。所以主耶和華如此說：我指着我的永生起誓，他既輕看我的誓言，背棄我的約，我必使這罪歸到他頭上。我要把我的網撒在他身上，他就被我的羅網纏住。我要帶他到巴比倫，在那裏因他背叛我的罪懲罰他。

就不可硬着心，像在背叛之時，就如在曠野受試探之日。
