耶和华说：“日子将到，我要与以色列家和犹大家另立新约，不像我拉着他们祖宗的手，领他们出埃及地的时候，与他们所立的约。我虽作他们的丈夫，他们却背了我的约。这是耶和华说的。”

他们就立约，要尽心尽性地寻求耶和华他们列祖的神。凡不寻求耶和华以色列神的，无论大小、男女，必被治死。

又将约书念给百姓听。他们说：“耶和华所吩咐的，我们都必遵行。”

希勒家对书记沙番说：“我在耶和华殿里得了律法书。”遂将书递给沙番。

到了七月，以色列人住在自己的城里。那时，他们如同一人聚集在水门前的宽阔处，请文士以斯拉将耶和华藉摩西传给以色列人的律法书带来。七月初一日，祭司以斯拉将律法书带到听了能明白的男女会众面前。在水门前的宽阔处，从清早到晌午，在众男女、一切听了能明白的人面前读这律法书。众民侧耳而听。文士以斯拉站在为这事特备的木台上。玛他提雅、示玛、亚奈雅、乌利亚、希勒家，和玛西雅站在他的右边；毗大雅、米沙利、玛基雅、哈顺、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亚，和米书兰站在他的左边。以斯拉站在众民以上，在众民眼前展开这书。他一展开，众民就都站起来。

他作王第三年，就差遣臣子便亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦业、米该亚往犹大各城去教训百姓。同着他们有利未人示玛雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亚撒黑、示米拉末、约拿单、亚多尼雅、多比雅、驼巴多尼雅，又有祭司以利沙玛、约兰同着他们。他们带着耶和华的律法书，走遍犹大各城教训百姓。

再者，传道者因有智慧，仍将知识教训众人；又默想，又考查，又陈说许多箴言。传道者专心寻求可喜悦的言语，是凭正直写的诚实话。

大小都在那里；奴仆脱离主人的辖制。

那时，所罗门说：“耶和华曾说他必住在幽暗之处。但我已经建造殿宇作你的居所，为你永远的住处。”王转脸为以色列会众祝福，以色列会众就都站立。所罗门说：“耶和华以色列的神是应当称颂的！因他亲口向我父大卫所应许的，也亲手成就了。他说：‘自从我领我民出埃及地以来，我未曾在以色列众支派中选择一城建造殿宇为我名的居所，也未曾拣选一人作我民以色列的君；但选择耶路撒冷为我名的居所，又拣选大卫治理我民以色列。’”所罗门说：“我父大卫曾立意要为耶和华以色列神的名建殿，耶和华却对我父大卫说：‘你立意要为我的名建殿，这意思甚好；只是你不可建殿，惟你所生的儿子必为我名建殿。’“现在耶和华成就了他所应许的话，使我接续我父大卫坐以色列的国位，是照耶和华所说的，又为耶和华以色列神的名建造了殿。我将约柜安置在其中，柜内有耶和华的约，就是他与以色列人所立的约。”

书记沙番又对王说：“祭司希勒家递给我一卷书。”沙番就在王面前读那书。王听见律法上的话，就撕裂衣服，

审判的时候，不可看人的外貌；听讼不可分贵贱，不可惧怕人，因为审判是属乎神的。若有难断的案件，可以呈到我这里，我就判断。’

王吩咐众民说：“你们当照这约书上所写的，向耶和华你们的神守逾越节。”

先是亚兰王吩咐车兵长说：“他们的兵将，无论大小，你们都不可与他们争战，只要与以色列王争战。”

耶和华如此说：我必照着在犹大王面前所读那书上的一切咒诅，降祸与这地和其上的居民；
