我傳道者曾在耶路撒冷做以色列的王。

他登基後，要在利未祭司面前為自己抄錄一份律法書，把它放在身邊，一生誦讀，以便學習敬畏他的上帝耶和華，遵守律法書上的一切誡命和律例。這樣，他就不會妄自尊大，違背誡命，他和他的子孫就可以長久統治以色列。

耶和華說：「看啊，時候將到，我要與以色列家和猶大家另立新約，這約不同於我與他們祖先所立的約，就是我牽著他們祖先的手領他們離開埃及時所立的。雖然我是他們的丈夫，他們卻違背了我的約。這是耶和華說的。」

他們又與他們祖先的上帝耶和華立約，要全心全意地尋求祂。凡不尋求以色列的上帝耶和華的，無論男女老幼，一律處死。

他又把約書念給百姓聽，百姓聽了都說：「我們願意遵行耶和華的一切吩咐，我們願意順服。」

希勒迦就對沙番書記說：「我在耶和華的殿裡發現了律法書。」希勒迦就把書卷交給沙番。

全體民眾萬眾一心，聚集在水門前的廣場上。他們請律法教師以斯拉帶來耶和華藉摩西頒給以色列人的律法書。七月一日，以斯拉祭司把律法書帶到能聽懂的男女會眾面前，面向水門前的廣場，從清早到正午一直向他們宣讀律法書，人們都側耳傾聽。律法教師以斯拉站在為這聚會預備的木臺上，站在他右邊的是瑪他提雅、示瑪、亞奈雅、烏利亞、希勒迦和瑪西雅；站在他左邊的是毗大雅、米沙利、瑪基雅、哈順、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亞和米書蘭。以斯拉站在高處，他在全體會眾面前一打開書卷，他們都站了起來。

他在執政第三年委派官員便·亥伊勒、俄巴底、撒迦利雅、拿坦業和米該亞到猶大各城教導民眾，與他們同去的還有利未人示瑪雅、尼探雅、西巴第雅、亞撒黑、示米拉末、約拿單、亞多尼雅、多比雅和駝·巴多尼雅，還有祭司以利沙瑪和約蘭。他們帶著耶和華的律法書，走遍猶大各城鎮教導民眾。

傳道者不但有智慧，還把知識傳授給眾人。他經過細心推敲和研究之後，編寫了許多警世的箴言。傳道者費盡心思尋找金玉良言，所寫的都是正直誠實的道理。

尊貴與卑賤的人都在那裡，奴僕不再受主人的轄制。

那時，所羅門說：「耶和華啊，你曾說你要住在密雲中，現在我為你建造了殿宇，作你永遠的居所。」王轉身為站立在那裡的以色列全體會眾祝福。他說：「以色列的上帝耶和華當受稱頌！祂親口給我父大衛的應許，祂也親手成就了！祂曾說，『自從我把我的子民帶出埃及以來，我並沒有在以色列眾支派中選出一座城建造殿宇作為我名所在之地，也沒有選立一人做我以色列子民的君王。但如今，我揀選了耶路撒冷作為我名所在之地，又揀選了大衛來治理我的以色列子民。』」所羅門又說：「我父大衛曾想建一座殿來尊崇以色列的上帝耶和華之名，但耶和華對我父大衛說，『你想為我建殿，這番心意是好的，但你不要建，要由你的親生兒子為我建殿。』現在耶和華已經成就祂的應許，讓我繼承我父大衛的王位統治以色列，又為以色列的上帝耶和華的名建了殿。我把約櫃安放在裡面，約櫃裡有耶和華與以色列人所立的約。」

沙番書記又對王說：「希勒迦祭司交給我一卷書。」沙番就在王面前誦讀這書。王聽了律法書上的話，就撕裂衣服，

不可偏私，不分貴賤，不懼情面，因為判決來自上帝。如果案件太難，可以交給我處理。

約西亞王吩咐民眾：「你們應當依照約書的記載慶祝逾越節，以尊崇你們的上帝耶和華。」

亞蘭王已經吩咐戰車長不要與對方的大小軍兵交鋒，只攻擊以色列王。

耶和華說，『我要照在猶大王面前所讀的那書上的一切咒詛，降災難給這地方及這裡的居民。
