In his division were twenty- four thousand.The twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel. These were the captains of the tribes of Israel.But David didn’t take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky.Joab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons.Ahithophel was the king’s counselor. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.After Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was the captain of the king’s army.

All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.
