“ You are saying,‘ I have defeated Edom,’ and you are very proud of it. But my advice is to stay at home. Why stir up trouble that will only bring disaster on you and the people of Judah?”

Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

He did all this so you would never say to yourself,‘ I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’

“ Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.

Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud,

He instituted a religious festival for Israel, and he went up to the altar to burn incense.At the Lord’s command, a man of God from Judah went to Bethel, arriving there just as Jeroboam was approaching the altar to burn incense.Then at the Lord’s command, he shouted,“ O altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: A child named Josiah will be born into the dynasty of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests from the pagan shrines who come here to burn incense, and human bones will be burned on you.”That same day the man of God gave a sign to prove his message. He said,“ The Lord has promised to give this sign: This altar will split apart, and its ashes will be poured out on the ground.”When King Jeroboam heard the man of God speaking against the altar at Bethel, he pointed at him and shouted,“ Seize that man!” But instantly the king’s hand became paralyzed in that position, and he couldn’t pull it back.

So each of these men prepared an incense burner, lit the fire, and placed incense on it. Then they all stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle with Moses and Aaron.

Then fire blazed forth from the Lord and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.

Light fires in them tomorrow, and burn incense before the Lord. Then we will see whom the Lord chooses as his holy one. You Levites are the ones who have gone too far!”

When the king returned, he inspected the altar and made offerings on it.He presented a burnt offering and a grain offering, he poured out a liquid offering, and he sprinkled the blood of peace offerings on the altar.
