示撒率領一千二百輛戰車、六萬騎兵及無數的路比人、蘇基人和古實人。

以色列人從猶大人面前逃跑，上帝把他們交在猶大人手中。

耶和華拯救義人，患難時作他們的庇護所。耶和華幫助他們，拯救他們脫離惡人，因為他們投靠祂。

古實王謝拉率領一百萬大軍和三百輛戰車攻打猶大，到了瑪利沙。亞撒出兵迎敵，雙方在瑪利沙的洗法谷擺開陣勢。亞撒呼求他的上帝耶和華說：「耶和華啊，唯有你才能幫助弱小的勝過強大的。我們的上帝耶和華啊，求你幫助我們，因為我們依靠你，奉你的名迎戰這大軍。耶和華啊，你是我們的上帝，不要讓人勝過你。」於是，耶和華使古實人敗在亞撒和猶大人面前，古實人潰逃。

那時，哈拿尼先見晉見猶大王亞撒說：「因為你不倚靠你的上帝耶和華，反而倚靠亞蘭王，所以亞蘭王的軍隊已經從你手中逃脫。

這樣，以色列人被擊敗，猶大人因為倚靠他們祖先的上帝耶和華而大獲全勝。

耶和華是受欺壓之人的避難所，是他們患難之時的避風港。耶和華啊，凡認識你名的人都必信靠你，因為你從來不丟棄尋求你的人。
