然則爾之出也、果何為乎？欲睹先知乎？吾曰是矣、然奚啻先知而已哉！

爾等與異邦人雜處、尤宜慎自檢點、勉立善表、務使謗爾者見爾善行、而頌揚天主於眷顧之日。

對曰：『巴總高乃流、正人也、敬畏上主、為猶太舉國之所稱道、近蒙聖天神指示、邀汝至其家、俾聆汝教。』

耶穌復謂門徒曰：『厲階之生、在所不免；然而甘為厲階者、禍莫大焉！

天神語畢而杳。高乃流即召二僕與一虔誠之侍卒、

為奴僕者、當服從斯世之主人、一如服從基督、戰戰兢兢、表裡如一、毋陽奉陰違、貌合神離、專以取悅於人為務；當如基督之奴僕、一本赤誠、奉行天主之旨、中心悅服、非以為人、乃以為主。應知人有善行、主必報之、固無間於奴僕與主人也。

爾蒙召時為奴乎、是亦何足為慮；然萬一有自由機會、則亦不妨利用之。蓋為奴而蒙主之召、在主已為自由之人矣；自由之人而蒙召者、亦為基督之奴矣。

今爾何為拂逆天主、而欲以吾列祖及吾儕所不堪負荷之軛、加諸信徒之項乎？

故吾寧願青年寡婦再適、生子宜家、庶幾不予敵人以口實；

講道時、更宜正心誠意、態度莊重、言語純潔、無可指摘、如此則反對之人、將以吾人無懈可擊、而自慚矣。對為奴者、應勸其服從主人、事事委順、毋違言、毋私取、披心相付、忠於所事；此正所以顯揚我等救主天主之聖道、於日用之間也。

無論對猶太人、或希臘人、或聖教同人、皆須小心謹慎、莫為厲階。吾本人之所以和光同塵、舍己從人者、亦欲感化眾人、誘其歸主而已矣。

為奴者應服從其世俗之主人、一切惟命、毋陽奉陰違、一如專務取悅於人者之所為、務宜表裏如一；畏主故也。總之、爾等凡有所為、應由衷而行、所以為主也、非為人也。應知惟主能賜爾以所望之洪基。尚其一心奉事主基督；蓋惡人所作之孽、必受報應；天主固大公廓如、不徇私情也。
