現在，你的王在哪裏呢？讓他在你的各城中拯救你吧！你曾說「給我立君王和官長」，那些治理你的又在哪裏呢？我在怒氣中將王賜給你，又在烈怒中將王廢去。

你們若不斷作惡，你們和你們的王必一同滅亡。」

我將這一切事放在心上，詳細研究這些，就知道義人和智慧人，並他們的作為都在上帝手中；或是愛，或是恨，都在他們面前，但人不能知道。凡臨到眾人的際遇都一樣：義人和惡人，好人，潔淨的人和不潔淨的人，獻祭的和不獻祭的，都一樣。好人如何，罪人也如何；起誓的如何，怕起誓的也如何。

眾百姓到了吉甲那裏，在耶和華面前擁立掃羅為王，又在耶和華面前獻平安祭。掃羅和以色列眾人在那裏都非常歡喜。

這樣，掃羅和他三個兒子，以及他的全家都一起陣亡了。

非利士人進攻，以色列人敗了，各往自己的家逃跑。被殺的人很多，以色列倒下的步兵有三萬。上帝的約櫃被擄去，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈也都被殺了。

耶和華也必將你和以色列交在非利士人手裏。明日你和你兒子們必與我在一處了；耶和華也必將以色列的軍兵交在非利士人手裏。」
