扫罗从以色列中选出三千人：二千跟随扫罗在密抹和伯特利山区，一千跟随约拿单在便雅悯的基比亚。其余的百姓，扫罗打发他们各自回自己的帐棚去了。

那寻索我命的设下罗网，那想要害我的口出恶言，整日思想诡计。

你们要看清楚，调查他藏匿的每一个地方，回来给我确实的报告，我就与你们同去。他若在境内，我必从犹大的千门万户中搜出他来。”西弗人动身，在扫罗以先往西弗去。大卫和他的人却在玛云旷野，在荒野南边的亚拉巴。扫罗和他的人去寻索大卫。有人告诉大卫，他就下到岩石那里，留在玛云的旷野。扫罗听见了，就在玛云的旷野追赶大卫。
