非利士人擺陣迎戰以色列人；戰鬥展開後，以色列人敗在非利士人面前，非利士人在戰場上擊殺了大約四千人。

神的約櫃被奪去，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了。有一個便雅憫人從軍陣中跑出來，當天來到示羅，他的戰袍撕裂，頭蒙灰塵。他來到的時候，看哪，以利正坐在路旁的座位上守望，因為他為神的約櫃憂心。那人進城裡報信時，全城都哀叫起來。以利聽見呼號的聲音，就問：「這喧囂的聲音是怎麼回事呢？」那人趕快過來，向以利報告。以利已經九十八歲了，眼目僵直，不能看見。那人對以利說：「我是從軍陣中來的，我今天剛從軍陣中逃出來。」以利就問：「我兒，情況怎麼樣？」報信的人回答說：「以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，而且民中遭受了極大的殺戮，你的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了，神的約櫃被奪去了。」他一提到神的約櫃，以利就從座位上向後仰倒在城門邊，由於人老體重，脖子折斷而死。以利作以色列的士師四十年。當時以利的兒媳婦，非尼哈的妻子懷孕臨產，她一聽到消息說神的約櫃被奪去、她的公公和丈夫也死了，就被陣痛擊潰，屈身生產。她臨死的時候，身邊侍候的婦女們說：「不要擔心，你生了一個兒子！」她卻沒有回應，也不理會。

其中有佩戴著以弗得的亞希雅。他是亞希突的兒子，亞希突是以迦博的哥哥，是非尼哈的兒子，非尼哈是從前在示羅作耶和華祭司的以利的兒子。當時人們不知道約拿單離開了。

因為惡人的膀臂必被打斷，耶和華卻扶助義人。
