Saul said,“ Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”“ Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied. But the priest said,“ Let us inquire of God here.”

Saul said,“ Let’s go down and chase after the Philistines tonight. Let’s not leave even one of them alive. Let’s take everything they have before morning.”“ Do what you think is best,” they replied. But the priest said,“ Let’s ask God for advice first.”

Then Saul said,“ Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light; let us not leave a man of them.” And they said,“ Do whatever seems good to you.” But the priest said,“ Let us draw near to God here.”

Then Saul said,“ Let’s chase the Philistines all night and plunder them until sunrise. Let’s destroy every last one of them.” His men replied,“ We’ll do whatever you think is best.” But the priest said,“ Let’s ask God first.”

Then Saul said,“ Let’s go down after the Philistines by night and take plunder among them until the morning light, and let’s not leave a man among them alive.” And they said,“ Do whatever seems good to you.” So the priest said,“ Let’s approach God here.”

Now Saul said,“ Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light; and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said,“ Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said,“ Let us draw near to God here.”

And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

Saul said,“ Let’s go down after the Philistines at night; we will rout them until the break of day. We won’t leave any of them alive!” They replied,“ Do whatever seems best to you.” But the priest said,“ Let’s approach God here.”

Saul said,“ Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder among them until the morning light, and let’s not leave a man of them.” They said,“ Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said,“ Let’s draw near here to God.”

“ Listen to this, house of Jacob— those who are called by the name Israel and have descended from Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD and declare the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness.For they are named after the holy city, and lean on the God of Israel; his name is the LORD of Armies.

The Israelites plundered all the spoils and cattle of these cities for themselves. But they struck down every person with the sword until they had annihilated them, leaving no one alive.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod, was also there. He was the son of Ahitub, the brother of Ichabod son of Phinehas, son of Eli the LORD’s priest at Shiloh. But the troops did not know that Jonathan had left.

They seek me day after day and delight to know my ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not abandon the justice of their God. They ask me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”

But as for the rest of you, don’t stay there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Don’t let them enter their cities, for the LORD your God has handed them over to you.”

So Joshua caught them by surprise, after marching all night from Gilgal.The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel. He defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them through the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.As they fled before Israel, the LORD threw large hailstones on them from the sky along the descent of Beth-horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites killed with the sword.On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel:“ Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”And the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance on its enemies. Isn’t this written in the Book of Jashar? So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting almost a full day.There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.

He will stand before the priest Eleazar who will consult the LORD for him with the decision of the Urim. He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command.”

For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should desire instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the LORD of Armies.

But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all you do.

Saul told Ahijah,“ Bring the ark of God,” for it was with the Israelites at that time.While Saul spoke to the priest, the panic in the Philistine camp increased in intensity. So Saul said to the priest,“ Stop what you’re doing.”

The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions. During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
