廢去掃羅之後，又為他們興起大衛作王，並且為他作證說：‘我找到耶西的兒子大衛，他是合我心意的人，必遵行我的一切旨意。’

撒母耳就對他說：“今天耶和華把以色列國從你身上撕裂，賜給比你更好的人。

那時，你在異象中告訴你的聖民說：“我幫助了一位勇士，我從民中興起了一位青年（“我從民中興起了一位青年”或譯：“我興起那從民中所揀選的”）。我找到我的僕人大衛，用我的聖膏油膏他。我的手必堅立他，我的膀臂必堅固他。仇敵必不能欺騙他，兇惡的人必不能壓迫他。我要在他的面前擊碎他的敵人，擊殺那些恨他的人。我的信實和慈愛必與他同在，他的角必因我的名被高舉。我必使他的左手伸到大海，使他的右手伸到大河。他必呼叫我，說：‘你是我的父、我的神、拯救我的磐石。’我也要立他為長子，為世上最高的君王。我要永遠保持我對他的慈愛，我和他所立的約必堅立。我要使他的後裔存到永遠，使他的王位好像天一樣長久。如果他的子孫離棄我的律法，不照著我的典章而行；如果他們違背我的律例，不遵守我的誡命，我就用杖責罰他們的過犯，用鞭責罰他們的罪孽。但我必不把我的慈愛從他身上收回，也必不背棄我的信實。我必不違背我的約，也不改變我口中所出的話。我斷然指著自己的聖潔起誓，說：‘我決不向大衛說謊。他的後裔必存到永遠，他的王位在我面前必像太陽長存，又像月亮永遠堅立，作天上確實的見證。’”（細拉）

因此，耶和華以色列的神說：‘我曾說：你的家和你的父家，必永遠行在我面前。’現在耶和華卻說：‘我決不容你們這樣行了，因為尊重我的，我必尊重他；藐視我的，必受到輕視。

“你回去對我子民的君主希西家說：‘你祖大衛的神耶和華這樣說：我聽見了你的禱告，看見了你的眼淚。看哪，我必醫治你，第三日你要上耶和華的殿。

耶西就派人去把大衛帶回來。他面色紅潤，眼目清秀，外貌英俊。耶和華說：“就是這一個，你起來膏立他吧！”

“明天大約這個時候，我要差派一個人從便雅憫地到你那裡去，你要膏立他作我子民以色列人的領袖。他要拯救我的子民脫離非利士人的手。我眷顧了我的子民，因為他們的哀求已經達到我這裡。”

但我的慈愛必不離開他，像離開在你面前的掃羅一樣。你的家和你的王國，也必在我(按照《馬索拉文本》，「我」作「你」；現參照其他抄本及古譯本翻譯)的面前永遠堅定，你的王位也必永遠堅立。’”

萬有因他而有、藉他而造的那位，為了要帶領許多兒子進入榮耀裡去，使救他們的元首藉著受苦而得到成全，本是合適的。

大衛在神面前蒙了恩，就求為雅各的神找個居所，

從前掃羅作我們的王的時候，領導以色列人行動的是你。耶和華也曾對你說：‘你要牧養我的子民以色列，要作以色列的領袖。’”

耶和華對撒母耳說：“你為掃羅悲哀要到幾時呢？我已經棄絕他作以色列的王了。你把膏油盛滿了角，然後去吧！我要差派你到伯利恆人耶西那裡去，因為我在他的眾子中，已經預定了一個為我作王。”

他揀選了自己的僕人大衛，把他從羊圈中召出來；
