Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land— whom the Israelites could not exterminate— to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day.

They were children of the people who had lived in the land before the Israelites came. Those people had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. But the Israelites hadn’t been able to kill all of them. Solomon forced them to work very hard as his slaves. And they still work for Israel as slaves to this day.

These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them as slaves, and they serve as forced laborers to this day.

But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

Then he said:“ Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brethren.”And he said:“ Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant.

These are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem.( But in the cities of Judah everyone dwelt in his own possession in their cities— Israelites, priests, Levites, Nethinim, and descendants of Solomon’s servants.)

The sons of Solomon’s servants: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Sophereth, the sons of Peruda,the sons of Jaala, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel,the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth of Zebaim, and the sons of Ami.All the Nethinim and the children of Solomon’s servants were three hundred and ninety-two.

The sons of Solomon’s servants: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Sophereth, the sons of Perida,

Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said,“ Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice,I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died,so that through them I may test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not.”Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.Now these are the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan( this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it),namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

But the children of Joseph said,“ The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its towns and those who are of the Valley of Jezreel.”And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph— to Ephraim and Manasseh— saying,“ You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot,but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.”

They did not destroy the peoples, Concerning whom the Lord had commanded them,But they mingled with the Gentiles And learned their works;They served their idols, Which became a snare to them.

And this is the reason for the labor force which King Solomon raised: to build the house of the Lord, his own house, the Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

Then King Solomon raised up a labor force out of all Israel; and the labor force was thirty thousand men.

However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute.Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they were put under tribute.
