When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:

“ When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you, and when they turn back to you and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication to you in this temple,

“ Suppose your people Israel have lost the battle against their enemies. And suppose they’ve sinned against you. But they turn back to you and praise your name. They pray to you in this temple. And they ask you to help them.

“ When your people Israel are defeated before the enemy because they have sinned against you, and if they turn again to you and acknowledge your name and pray and plead with you in this house,

“ If your people Israel are defeated by their enemies because they have sinned against you, and if they turn to you and acknowledge your name and pray to you here in this Temple,

“ The time will come when your people Israel are defeated by an enemy because they sinned against you. If they come back to you, renew their allegiance to you, and pray for your help in this temple,

“ When your people Israel are struck down before the enemy, because they have sinned against you; if they turn again to you, and confess your name, and pray and make supplication to you in this house;

And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;And[ that] I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.

Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all[ things]: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.

And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of[ my] covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where[ is] thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?Doubtless thou[ art] our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD,[ art] our father, our redeemer; thy name[ is] from everlasting.O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways,[ and] hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.The people of thy holiness have possessed[ it] but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.We are[ thine]: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,As[ when] the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries,[ that] the nations may tremble at thy presence!When thou didst terrible things[ which] we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.For since the beginning of the world[ men] have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee,[ what] he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness,[ those that] remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.But we are all as an unclean[ thing], and all our righteousnesses[ are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.And[ there is] none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.But now, O LORD, thou[ art] our father; we[ are] the clay, and thou our potter; and we all[ are] the work of thy hand.Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we[ are] all thy people.Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.Wilt thou refrain thyself for these[ things], O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put[ it] even among their own stuff.Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies,[ but] turned[ their] backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee; and shall return and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication before thee in this house;Then hear thou from the heavens, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest to them and to their fathers.

And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did[ it] not.

For[ so] it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.And the children of Israel did secretly[ those] things that[ were] not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as[ did] the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger:For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets,[ and by] all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments[ and] my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that[ were] round about them,[ concerning] whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images,[ even] two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor[ by] the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant,[ and] all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear[ them], nor do[ them].

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel:[ and] because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which[ are] in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over[ our] head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.Since the days of our fathers[ have] we[ been] in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings,[ and] our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as[ it is] this day.And now for a little space grace hath been[ shewed] from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.For we[ were] bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave[ it] for an inheritance to your children for ever.And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities[ deserve], and hast given us[ such] deliverance as this;Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed[ us], so that[ there should be] no remnant nor escaping?O LORD God of Israel, thou[ art] righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as[ it is] this day: behold, we[ are] before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God[ one] fourth part of the day; and[ another] fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani,[ and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah,[ and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up[ and] bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying,[ If] ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:But[ if] ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven,[ yet] will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till[ there was] no remedy.Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave[ them] all into his hand.

And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.O Lord, righteousness[ belongeth] unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel,[ that are] near, and[ that are] far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.O Lord, to us[ belongeth] confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.To the Lord our God[ belong] mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that[ is] written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.As[ it is] written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God[ is] righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people[ are become] a reproach to all[ that are] about us.Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
