When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark,

In the morning Joshua said to the priests,“ Lift up the Ark of the Covenant and lead the people across the river.” And so they started out and went ahead of the people.

So Moses wrote this entire body of instruction in a book and gave it to the priests, who carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, and to the elders of Israel.

giving these instructions to the people:“ When you see the Levitical priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, move out from your positions and follow them.

The camp will be ready to move when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the sacred articles. The Kohathites will come and carry these things to the next destination. But they must not touch the sacred objects, or they will die. So these are the things from the Tabernacle that the Kohathites must carry.

Then he commanded,“ No one except the Levites may carry the Ark of God. The Lord has chosen them to carry the Ark of the Lord and to serve him forever.”

But he gave none of the wagons or oxen to the Kohathite division, since they were required to carry the sacred objects of the Tabernacle on their shoulders.

Joshua also set up another pile of twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, at the place where the priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant were standing. And they are there to this day.

Then David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and these Levite leaders: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.He said to them,“ You are the leaders of the Levite families. You must purify yourselves and all your fellow Levites, so you can bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the Lord our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly.”So the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to Jerusalem.Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

So the people left their camp to cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them.It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge,

So Joshua called together the priests and said,“ Take up the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, and assign seven priests to walk in front of it, each carrying a ram’s horn.”

The priests and Levites brought up the Ark along with the special tent and all the sacred items that had been in it.There, before the Ark, King Solomon and the entire community of Israel sacrificed so many sheep, goats, and cattle that no one could keep count!Then the priests carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant into the inner sanctuary of the Temple— the Most Holy Place— and placed it beneath the wings of the cherubim.The cherubim spread their wings over the Ark, forming a canopy over the Ark and its carrying poles.
