約書亞又吩咐祭司說：“你們要抬起約櫃，在人民前面過河去。”於是他們抬起約櫃，走在人民的前面。

摩西把這律法寫好了，就交給抬耶和華約櫃的利未支派的祭司子孫，和以色列的眾長老。

吩咐人民說：“你們看見耶和華你們的神的約櫃，又看見抬約櫃的利未支派的祭司的時候，就要從你們所住的地方出發，跟在約櫃後面走。

全營出發的時候，亞倫和他的兒子，把聖所和聖所的一切器具遮蓋完了以後，哥轄的子孫就要來抬；只是他們不可觸摸聖物，免得他們死亡。會幕裡這些物件是哥轄的子孫應當抬的。

那時大衛說：“神的約櫃，除了利未人以外，沒有人可以抬，因為耶和華揀選了他們抬神的約櫃，並且永遠事奉他。”

但是沒有分給哥轄的子孫，因為他們所辦的事是聖所的事，是要用肩頭抬的。

約書亞又在約旦河中間，在抬約櫃的祭司的腳所站的地方，豎立十二塊石頭；那些石頭到今日還在那裡。

大衛把撒督和亞比亞他兩位祭司，以及烏列、亞帥雅、約珥、示瑪雅、以列和亞米拿達幾位利未人，召了來，對他們說：“你們是利未人各家族的首領，你們和你們的親族都要自潔，好把以色列的神耶和華的約櫃抬上來，到我為它預備的地方去。先前沒有你們，耶和華我們的神就擊打我們，因為我們沒有按照定例尋求他。”於是祭司和利未人自潔，好把以色列的神耶和華的約櫃抬上來。利未支派的子孫照著耶和華的話，就是摩西所吩咐的，用肩和槓來抬神的約櫃。

人民離開帳棚出發，要過約旦河的時候，抬約櫃的祭司在人民的前面。抬約櫃的祭司來到約旦河，他們的腳碰到水邊的時候（原來約旦河水在收割的日子，常是漲過兩岸的），

於是嫩的兒子約書亞把祭司召了來，對他們說：“你們要抬起約櫃；並派七個祭司拿著七個羊角，走在耶和華約櫃的前面。”

他們把約櫃、會幕和會幕裡的一切神聖器皿都抬上來；是祭司和利未人把它們抬上來的。所羅門王和那些聚集到他那裡的以色列全體會眾，都在約櫃前獻上牛羊為祭，數量無法計算，不能數點。眾祭司把耶和華的約櫃抬進放約櫃的地方，就是內殿，至聖所裡面，放在兩個基路伯的翅膀底下。基路伯在約櫃上面張開翅膀，遮蓋著約櫃和抬約櫃的槓。
