孩子渐渐长大。一天，他到收割的人那里找他父亲。突然，他对他父亲喊道：“我的头啊！我的头啊！”他父亲见状，立刻吩咐仆人抱他到他母亲那里。仆人把他抱起来，送到他母亲那里。孩子坐在母亲的膝上，到中午就死了。

亲爱的弟兄姊妹，若有火一般的试炼临到你们，不要觉得奇怪，以为发生了什么不寻常的事，

我的弟兄姊妹，当你们遭遇各种磨炼的时候，都要认为是喜乐的事。要知道你们的信心经过考验会产生坚忍。你们要坚忍到底，使你们纯全、完备、毫无缺欠。

你若对它们弃而不顾，它们会惊慌失措。你一收回它们的气息，它们便死亡，归于尘土。

上帝若决定收回自己的灵和气，

竟在天上的主面前自大，命人拿来祂殿里的器皿，供你和大臣、王后、妃嫔用来饮酒，并颂赞不能看、不能听、一无所知、用金、银、铜、铁、木、石所造的神明，却不尊崇赐你生命气息、掌管你一举一动的上帝。

“我必将施恩和祷告的灵浇灌在大卫家和耶路撒冷的居民身上。他们必仰望我——他们所刺的那位，如丧独子一般为祂哀伤，如丧长子一般为祂痛哭。

这些事以后，上帝要考验亚伯拉罕，就呼唤他：“亚伯拉罕！”他回答说：“我在这里。”上帝说：“带着你的儿子，你的独生子，你疼爱的以撒前往摩利亚，在我指示你的山上把他献为燔祭。”

这样，你们的信心经过试验便显明是真实的，比那经过火炼仍会坏掉的金子更加宝贵，使你们可以在耶稣基督显现时得到称赞、荣耀和尊贵。

她们姊妹两个托人去告诉耶稣，说：“主啊，你所爱的人病了！”耶稣听见后，说：“这病不会致命，而是为了上帝的荣耀，使祂的儿子借此得到荣耀。”

于是，耶稣清楚地对他们说：“拉撒路死了。

所有生灵都在祂手中，世人的气息也不例外。

在试炼中能够忍耐到底的人有福了，因为他若经得起考验，就会得到主应许赐给爱祂之人的生命冠冕。

身体没有灵魂是死的，同样，信心没有行为也是死的。
