他重建他父亲希西迦拆毁的丘坛，效法以色列王亚哈为巴力筑造祭坛，制造亚舍拉神像，并且祭拜和供奉天上的万象。耶和华曾指着祂的殿说：“我的名必在耶路撒冷”，而他却在耶和华的殿内建造异教的祭坛。他在耶和华殿的两个院子里建造祭拜天上万象的祭坛；他烧死自己的儿子，献作祭物；他行邪术，占卜，求问灵媒和巫师，做了许多耶和华视为恶的事，惹耶和华发怒。他雕刻亚舍拉神像，放在耶和华的殿中。关于这殿，耶和华曾对大卫和他儿子所罗门说：“我从以色列各支派中选择了耶路撒冷和这殿，我的名要在这里永远受尊崇。

当我引领他们进入我曾起誓要赐给他们的土地时，他们在所见的每一处高山或密林献祭，焚烧馨香的祭牲，向偶像奠酒，惹我发怒。我问他们，你们所去的高处是什么地方？’从此，那高处一直叫巴麻。

他们的儿女没有忘记绿树下、高岗上、

耶和华将击打以色列人，使他们像水中的芦苇一样颤抖不已。耶和华将把以色列人从祂赐给他们祖先的佳美之地连根拔起，抛散到幼发拉底河的彼岸，这都是因为他们制造亚舍拉神像，惹耶和华发怒。

我要从你们中间铲除亚舍拉神像，毁灭你们的偶像。

“你们不可为自己制造偶像，不可竖立神像和神柱，也不可在你们境内安放祭拜用的石像。我是你们的上帝耶和华。

“很久以前，我折断你的轭，解开你的捆索，你却拒绝事奉我，在各高岗上、绿树下躺卧淫乱。

他还在丘坛、山冈和绿树下献祭烧香。

也不可竖立神柱，因为这些是你们的上帝耶和华所憎恶的。

‘你必须要承认自己的罪，承认背叛了你的上帝耶和华，在绿荫树下祭拜各种外邦的神明，不听从我的话。’这是耶和华说的。

那时候，用来尊崇耶和华之名的殿还没有建成，以色列人仍然在丘坛献祭。
