Then the Romans will come. They will take away our temple and our nation.”One of the Jewish leaders spoke up. His name was Caiaphas. He was high priest at that time. He said,“ You don’t know anything at all!You don’t realize what is good for you. It is better if one man dies for the people than if the whole nation is destroyed.”

“ What can we do with these men?” they asked.“ Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed an unusual miracle. We can’t say it didn’t happen.We have to stop this thing. It must not spread any further among the people. We have to warn these men. They must never speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself,“ If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him. He would know what kind of woman she is. She is a sinner!”

So the Pharisees said to one another,“ This isn’t getting us anywhere. Look how the whole world is following him!”
