Behold, I am telling you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ Because you have disobeyed the command of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you,but have returned and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which He said to you,“ You are not to eat bread nor drink water”; your dead body will not come to the grave of your fathers.’ ”It came about after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, for the prophet whom he had brought back.Now when he had gone, a lion met him on the way and killed him, and his body was thrown on the road, with the donkey standing beside it; the lion also was standing beside the body.

“ You only have I known among all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your wrongdoing.”

However, since by this deed you have shown utter disrespect for the Lord, the child himself who is born to you shall certainly die.”Then Nathan went to his house. L ater the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.David therefore pleaded with God for the child; and David fasted and went and lay all night on the ground.The elders of his household stood beside him in order to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said,“ Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to us. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might do himself harm?”

and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,“ My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are punished by Him;For whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He punishes every son whom He accepts.”It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
