For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom,

It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.

A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked,“ What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked,“ He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him,“ May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”( All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.He replied,“ When evening comes, you say,‘ It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’and in the morning,‘ Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
