所羅門在耶路撒冷的摩利亞山上動工興建耶和華的殿，殿址在耶布斯人阿珥楠的麥場，就是大衛指定的地方。耶和華曾在那裡向他父親大衛顯現。

殿前的門廊長九米，與殿的寬度一樣，高九米，裡面都貼上純金。

所羅門在做以色列王的第四年二月，即西弗月，開始為耶和華建殿。那時正是以色列人離開埃及後第四百八十年。所羅門王為耶和華建造的殿長二十七米，寬九米，高十三米半。殿前的門廊和殿一樣寬九米，深四米半。殿有精緻的窗戶。靠殿牆、圍著外殿和內殿又造了三層廂房，底層寬二點二五米，中層寬二點七米，上層寬三點一米。廂房的橫樑都搭在殿牆突出的地方，免得插入殿牆。建殿的石頭都在採石場鑿好了，建殿的時候聽不到錘子、斧頭或其他鐵器的響聲。

祭司亞撒利雅率領八十位耶和華勇敢的祭司跟著進殿，阻止烏西雅王，說：「烏西雅啊，給耶和華燒香不是你可以做的事，乃是承受聖職做祭司的亞倫子孫的事。離開聖所吧！你已干犯耶和華上帝，必不能從祂那裡得榮耀。」手拿香爐要燒香的烏西雅大怒，正當他在耶和華殿裡的香壇旁向眾祭司發怒的時候，他額頭上突然患了痲瘋病。亞撒利雅大祭司和眾祭司見狀，就催促他出殿，他急忙出去了，因為耶和華降災給他。
