那先知來見以色列王，對他說：「你當自強，留心怎樣防備；因為到明年這時候，亞蘭王必上來攻擊你。」

我就說：「主啊，這到幾時為止呢？」他說：直到城邑荒涼，無人居住，房屋空閒無人，地土極其荒涼。

約押攻取亞捫人的京城拉巴。約押打發使者去見大衛，說：「我攻打拉巴，取其水城。現在你要聚集其餘的軍兵來，安營圍攻這城，恐怕我取了這城，人就以我的名叫這城。」於是大衛聚集眾軍，往拉巴去攻城，就取了這城，奪了亞捫人之王所戴的金冠冕，其上的金子重一他連得，又嵌着寶石。人將這冠冕戴在大衛頭上。大衛從城裏奪了許多財物，將城裏的人拉出來，放在鋸下，或鐵耙下，或鐵斧下，或叫他經過磚窰；大衛待亞捫各城的居民都是如此。其後，大衛和眾軍都回耶路撒冷去了。

約押圍城的時候，知道敵人那裏有勇士，便將烏利亞派在那裏。城裏的人出來和約押打仗；大衛的僕人中有幾個被殺的，赫人烏利亞也死了。於是，約押差人去將爭戰的一切事告訴大衛，又囑咐使者說：「你把爭戰的一切事對王說完了，王若發怒，問你說：『你們打仗為甚麼挨近城牆呢？豈不知敵人必從城上射箭嗎？從前打死耶路‧比設兒子亞比米勒的是誰呢？豈不是一個婦人從城上拋下一塊上磨石來，打在他身上，他就死在提備斯嗎？你們為甚麼挨近城牆呢？』你就說：『王的僕人－赫人烏利亞也死了。』」使者起身，來見大衛，照着約押所吩咐他的話奏告大衛。使者對大衛說：「敵人強過我們，出到郊野與我們打仗，我們追殺他們，直到城門口。射箭的從城上射王的僕人，射死幾個，赫人烏利亞也死了。」王向使者說：「你告訴約押說：『不要因這事愁悶，刀劍或吞滅這人或吞滅那人，沒有一定的；你只管竭力攻城，將城傾覆。』可以用這話勉勵約押。」

你要定出一條路，使刀來到亞捫人的拉巴；又要定出一條路，使刀來到猶大的堅固城耶路撒冷。
