the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

The Ammonite commanders spoke to Hanun. They said,“ David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it.”

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun,“ Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”

the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun,“ Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?”

But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?”

When the men of Joseph spied out Bethel( it used to be called Luz),the spies spotted a man leaving the city. They said to him,“ If you show us a secret entrance into the city, we will reward you.”

But the leaders of the Philistines became angry with him and said to him,“ Send the man back! Let him return to the place that you assigned him! Don’t let him go down with us into the battle, for he might become our adversary in the battle. What better way to please his lord than with the heads of these men?

Achish replied to David,“ I am convinced that you are as reliable as the angel of God! However, the leaders of the Philistines have said,‘ He must not go up with us in the battle.’

When the Danites returned to their tribe in Zorah and Eshtaol, their kinsmen asked them,“ How did it go?”They said,“ Come on, let’s attack them, for we saw their land and it is very good. You seem lethargic, but don’t hesitate to invade and conquer the land.When you invade, you will encounter unsuspecting people. The land is wide! Then Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them, and he said to them,“ You are spies; you have come to see if our land is vulnerable!”But they exclaimed,“ No, my lord! Your servants have come to buy grain for food!We are all the sons of one man; we are honest men! Your servants are not spies.”“ No,” he insisted,“ but you have come to see if our land is vulnerable.”They replied,“ Your servants are from a family of twelve brothers. We are the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is with our father at this time, and one is no longer alive.”But Joseph told them,“ It is just as I said to you: You are spies!You will be tested in this way: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not depart from this place unless your youngest brother comes here.One of you must go and get your brother, while the rest of you remain in prison. In this way your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If not, then, as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”He imprisoned them all for three days.On the third day Joseph said to them,“ Do as I say and you will live, for I fear God.

The Danites sent out from their whole tribe five representatives, capable men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and explore it. They said to them,“ Go, explore the land.” They came to the Ephraimite hill country and spent the night at Micah’s house.

Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them:“ Find out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.” They stopped at the house of a prostitute named Rahab and spent the night there.The king of Jericho received this report:“ Note well! Israelite men have come here tonight to spy on the land.”So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab:“ Turn over the men who came to you– the ones who came to your house– for they have come to spy on the whole land!”
