But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?”

亚扪的官长却对哈嫩说：“大卫派人来安慰你，你以为他是来吊唁你父亲吗？他的臣仆来见你不过是来探听虚实，想征服这地方。”

但亚扪人的众领袖对哈嫩说：“大卫差派这些慰问的人到你这里来，你以为他是尊敬你父亲吗？他的臣仆来见你，不是为了窥探、倾覆、侦察这地吗？”

但亞捫人的首領對哈嫩說：「大衛差人來安慰你，你想他是尊敬你父親嗎？他的臣僕來見你不是為詳察窺探、傾覆這地嗎？」

亞捫族之牧伯謂哈嫩曰、大衛遣唁者詣爾、爾意大衛果敬爾父乎、其僕詣爾、詎非窺察此地、而滅之耶、

亞捫族諸伯告哈嫩曰、爾謂大闢唁爾父喪、其意豈在尊崇乎。蓋遣其臣、詳察我地、使我敗亡耳。

亞捫之侯伯謂哈嫩曰、大衛遣使來唁王、王以為大衛果敬王父乎、其臣僕來見王、乃欲窺探斯地以傾滅之、

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

The Ammonite commanders spoke to Hanun. They said,“ David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it.”

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun,“ Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”

the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun,“ Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?”

the Ammonite officials said to Hanun,“ Do you really think David is trying to honor your father by sending these messengers to express his sympathy? No, his servants have come to you so they can get information and spy out the land!”

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”

It does not act disgracefully, it does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered,it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;it keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

But he ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him and served him.He said to them,“ What advice do you give, so that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying,‘ Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying,“ This is what you should say to this people who spoke to you, saying:‘ Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!’ You should speak this way to them:‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!Now then, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke; yet I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions!’ ”

The house of Joseph had men spy out Bethel( the name of the city previously was Luz).And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him,“ Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will treat you kindly.”

But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him,“ Make the man go back, so that he will return to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For how could this man find favor with his lord? Would it not be with the heads of these men?

But Achish replied to David,“ I know that you are pleasing in my sight, like an angel of God; nevertheless the commanders of the Philistines have said,‘ He must not go up with us into the battle.’

When they came back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them,“ What do you say?”And they said,“ Arise, and let’s go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you sit still? Do not hesitate to go, to enter, to take possession of the land.When you enter, you will come to an unsuspecting people with a spacious land; for God has handed it over to you, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and he said to them,“ You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land.”And they said to him,“ No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies.”Yet he said to them,“ No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!”But they said,“ Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive.”Yet Joseph said to them,“ It is as I said to you, you are spies;by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here!Send one of you and have him get your brother, while you remain confined, so that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, you are certainly spies!”So he put them all together in prison for three days.Now Joseph said to them on the third day,“ Do this and live, for I fear God:

So the sons of Dan sent from their family five men out of their whole number, valiant men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to explore it; and they said to them,“ Go, explore the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and stayed overnight there.

Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying,“ Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and rested there.But it was told to the king of Jericho, saying,“ Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying,“ Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out all the land.”
